National Science Foundation awards Michael Bartlett $590,600 to study soft composite manufacturing

March 6, 2023 by Mark Allinson Leave a Comment

Michael Bartlett, an assistant professor in Virginia Tech’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been granted a $590,600 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award to research and understand new strategies for manufacturing liquid metal-based soft composites.

These functional composites are deformable robust materials that could be used to make robots and electronics that are soft, stretchable, and compatible for skin-like wearable devices.

The CAREER award is the foundation’s most prestigious award for early career faculty, encouraging them to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their organizations. Keeping it Real: Are robot real estate agents the next big thing for the property industry?

February 4, 2022 by Mark Allinson Leave a Comment

In the UK alone, there are 21,641 estate agents – all of whom are paid salaries ranging from £14,000 to £60,000 per year.

As the world begins to once again open up, estate agents across the globe are once again out in force but, maybe not for long.

As businesses look for new ways to cut costs, many people feel that there may be a new real estate kid on the block – the robot.  [Read more…] about Keeping it Real: Are robot real estate agents the next big thing for the property industry?

Scientists research ‘matter waves’ to shine light on post electronics future

August 23, 2021 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

Most modern technologies owe their success to advances in electronics. These devices harness the flow of electrons in different ways to create computers, charge batteries, light-up displays, and move motors.

Now researchers are starting to explore ways to harness the flow of waves of whole atoms, called matter waves, to enable new kinds of sensors, computers, and scientific research.

This new field has been named atomtronics, owing to the focus on finding ways to move whole atoms rather than electrons in traditional electronics devices. [Read more…] about Scientists research ‘matter waves’ to shine light on post electronics future

Heraeus and Aachen University develop ‘fastest-ever’ artificial synapses

June 4, 2020 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

The boffins say that the secret is ‘foreign atoms in the oxide layer’ which have so far gone unnoticed by experts

Scientists and researchers from the materials science-oriented technology group Heraeus and the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance have developed what they describe as “artificial synapses” similar to the ones found in the human brain.

The collective of brainboxes say that their discovery could be useful in the development of branches of artificial intelligence, such as machine learning and deep learning.

The boffins discovered how the switching properties of artificial synapses can be specifically influenced. [Read more…] about Heraeus and Aachen University develop ‘fastest-ever’ artificial synapses

New solder paste enables further miniaturisation in automotive electronics

May 1, 2019 by Anna

For the production of miniaturised electrical systems, such as those used in the automotive industry, solder material must meet extremely high requirements.

In response, Heraeus Electronics has developed its new solder paste Microbond SMT650, which it says guarantees consistently high surface resistance.

The combination of the new F650 flux system with the Innolot metal alloy increases reliability and prevents electrochemical migration even under the most extreme environmental conditions.
