Hyundai to buy ‘tens of thousands of robots’ from Boston Dynamics

April 4, 2025 by David Edwards

Boston Dynamics, a developer of mobile robotics, and Hyundai Motor Group have entered “a new chapter together” to increase manufacturing capabilities, expand collaboration to produce more robots, and build a vibrant robotics ecosystem in the US.

Hyundai Motor Group says it will invest $21 billion in the US, including a $6 billion investment to drive innovation and expand strategic partnerships with US companies. As part of this new investment, Hyundai will purchase “tens of thousands of robots” in the next few years.

It will further enable Boston Dynamics’ growth by integrating its manufacturing capabilities to help make the company the world’s leading manufacturer of advanced mobile robots. [Read more…] about Hyundai to buy ‘tens of thousands of robots’ from Boston Dynamics

Opinion: How artificial intelligence redefines automation

March 4, 2025 by Mark Allinson

Article contributed by automatica 2025

The adoption of artificial intelligence is an increasingly critical factor for the viability of industrial production.

European companies run a particular risk of getting left behind with regard to this cutting-edge technology – even though all kinds of industrial AI solutions are readily available and implementing them is now easier than ever. The leading exhibition automatica will impressively demonstrate this in June 2025.

A December 2024 survey by the Statista Research Department details just how precarious the situation is. For example, China has the highest prevalence of AI production technology at 94 percent. [Read more…] about Opinion: How artificial intelligence redefines automation

Top 10 steel producers: Innovations, challenges, and future directions

January 17, 2025 by David Edwards

If you’re the kind of person who thinks steel is beautiful, you probably need to get a life. Or at least get out more.

But the thing about steel is that it’s always so shiny. So strong as well. If it’s stainless steel, like your average sink, you could use it for the rest of your life and it will look as shiny and as beautiful as the day it was made, provided you clean it of course.

Scientifically or technically speaking, even stainless steel does rust. But that’s boffins for you – always looking to spoil the party with useless facts. To the average person, with an average sink, stainless steel stays as good as new forever. [Read more…] about Top 10 steel producers: Innovations, challenges, and future directions

Top 10 robotic insects: Can robotic bees save all plant life on Earth?

January 16, 2025 by David Edwards

As someone who eats honey on toast almost every day, I’ve been quite interested over the past few years by stories about the supposed collapse of the global bee population.

Bees not only produce honey, they are, of course, nature’s great pollinators. Although not the only pollinators around, they’re the only ones who produce honey, as far as I know.

So, I thought I’d delve into this topic a little bit, in light of various academic institutions and companies developing tiny flying robots or drones that could potentially do the job of natural pollinators. [Read more…] about Top 10 robotic insects: Can robotic bees save all plant life on Earth?

Flexiv’s fish fillet shaping solution automates breaded cod production

September 26, 2024 by Mark Allinson

Flexiv, a developer of general-purpose robotics solutions, has launched what it calls “a revolutionary fish fillet shaping application”.

Fully automated by the Rizon 4 adaptive robot, the solution utilizes a combination of computer vision and force-control to identify and shape breaded fish fillets, so that consumers receive portions of a uniform size and shape.

Developed for one of Asia’s leading seafood producers, this task was traditionally performed by manual labor, where employees had to carefully shape each fillet to ensure a consistently sized end product. [Read more…] about Flexiv’s fish fillet shaping solution automates breaded cod production

On the road to decarbonization: The importance of the electric arc furnace route in steel production

August 5, 2024 by Mark Allinson

The steel industry is facing an epochal challenge: decarbonization. With growing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the need to mitigate climate change, steel manufacturers must find alternative ways to make their production more environmentally friendly.

In this context, the electric arc furnace route is becoming increasingly important and promises a more sustainable future for the steel industry.

Traditionally, steel has mainly been produced by the blast furnace route, which is based on smelting iron ore with coke. However, this process is extremely energy-intensive and results in significant CO2 emissions. In response, the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) route has gained popularity in recent years.
