Tech company AVI-SPL launches autonomous Dallas-Houston freight operations with Volvo Autonomous Solutions

July 10, 2026 by Sam Francis

AVI-SPL, a global technology solutions provider, and Volvo Autonomous Solutions have started commercial autonomous freight operations between Dallas and Houston using the Volvo VNL Autonomous powered by the Aurora Driver.

The operations will support AVI-SPL’s transport of various audio-visual electronics, including a mix of new products and end-of-life equipment from which AVI-SPL reclaims precious metals as a part of its Electronic Recycling Program.

The collaboration reflects AVI-SPL’s continued investment in operational innovation and supply chain strategies designed to improve scalability, reliability, and long-term efficiency. Waabi says its AI driver transferred to Volvo autonomous truck without retraining

July 7, 2026 by Sam Francis

Waabi says it has demonstrated what it describes as a major advance in autonomous driving by transferring its AI-powered virtual driver from one autonomous truck platform to another without requiring additional training, engineering or new data.

The company says its Waabi Driver software was integrated with the Volvo VNL Autonomous truck, developed in partnership with Volvo Autonomous Solutions, and was able to operate autonomously on highways and complex surface streets from its first deployment.

According to Waabi, the system achieved what is known as “zero-shot” generalization, meaning the AI driver transferred to an entirely different vehicle platform without requiring new real-world data, simulation data or fine-tuning. Oak Ridge National Lab reveals ‘hidden workforce’ behind AI-powered research facilities

July 6, 2026 by Sam Francis

By Clint Keeton

Behind every self-driving laboratory at the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory is a team most people never see. Facilities and Operations (F&O) workers are building and maintaining the infrastructure that makes autonomous science possible.

Autonomous labs run with little human intervention. Instead, they rely on robotics, sensors and automation to perform everything from pouring liquids to placing samples into ovens. They learn and adapt, with artificial intelligence making at least one decision in the process.

More than a dozen self-driving labs operate at ORNL, placing the Tennessee national lab among the first research institutions in the world to create this autonomous laboratory model at scale. [Read more…] about Oak Ridge National Lab reveals ‘hidden workforce’ behind AI-powered research facilities

How Kodiak uses AI and probabilistic risk assessment to measure autonomous trucking safety

June 17, 2026 by Sam Francis

Rapid AI advances now enable engineers to develop autonomous driving technology faster than ever, but the true frontier of autonomous driving is the ability to couple those advances with demonstrable and rigorous safety.

Increasingly, depth and rigor is achieved not through the biggest budgets nor the largest fleets, but by distilling the most precise insights from real-world testing and simulation that assure autonomous systems can handle rare and unusual scenarios, the kind that may only occur once in a lifetime of driving.

Autonomous truck maker Kodiak has met this challenge by adopting two tools, including one we created with the help of AI, that accelerate the pace, depth and precision of our safety engineering. They go beyond traditional approaches and deliver clear, compelling evidence of the Kodiak Driver’s safety. QCraft demonstrates urban NOA on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon Ride chip, targets 2026 global mass production

June 12, 2026 by Sam Francis

QCraft has demonstrated its urban Navigate-on-Autopilot (NOA) system running on Qualcomm’s SA8650P Snapdragon Ride platform in production vehicles, putting the autonomous driving company on track for global mass production this year.

The demonstration took place on June 5 at Qualcomm’s Automotive Technology and Cooperation Summit in Wuxi, China, where attendees took live test rides in SA8650P-equipped production cars navigating real urban traffic.

According to QCraft, the vehicles handled unprotected left turns, mixed pedestrian and vehicle traffic, tunnels, transitions between main roads and side streets, and congested maneuvering with smooth, human-like control.
