Ideal Spindles for High-Speed Robotic Milling of Plastics and Composites

October 2, 2023 by Mark Allinson

By Mark Fairchild

Robot arms are finding their way into a wide variety of applications because of their precision, strength, and versatility. Robotic milling systems have become more common in recent years and have several advantages over traditional machine tools for certain applications.

One application for which robot arms are well suited is using a kind of deburring tool as a cutting instrument when working with relatively soft materials like plastics and composites. [Read more…] about Ideal Spindles for High-Speed Robotic Milling of Plastics and Composites

Agility Robotics set to open ‘world’s first factory for humanoid robots’

September 29, 2023 by David Edwards

Agility Robotics, creator of the bipedal humanoid robot Digit, says it is planning to open what it calls “RoboFab”, the company’s robot manufacturing facility in Salem, Oregon with the capability to produce more than 10,000 robots per year.

Initial construction of Agility’s 70,000 square foot robot factory began last year, and it is set to open later this year. Agility anticipates production capacity of hundreds of Digit robots in the first year, with the capability to scale to more than 10,000 robots per year.

At full capacity, RoboFab will employ more than 500 workers in Salem, in addition to employees at Agility’s other locations. Digit also will work in the new factory, in a similar capacity to Agility’s customer sites, moving, loading, and unloading totes. Plymouth university students design and build ‘scarecrow’ robots to protect wildlife

September 25, 2023 by Mark Allinson

Plymouth State University (PSU) students in their “Spring 2023 Industrial Robotics” course began work on a multi-semester project to bring new life to a pair of robots belonging to Casella Waste Systems, which has used six of these robots to ward off wildlife at their Bethlehem, New Hampshire landfill for roughly the past four years.

The project will continue during the next school year, providing a hands-on learning experience in a partnership that will benefit students, Casella, and ultimately regional wildlife.

The partnership between Plymouth State University’s first-in-the-state Robotics bachelor’s degree program and Casella was created in the hopes of bringing many of these robots, which use obsolete systems and have fallen into general disrepair, back into peak working order.
