ABB invests in Scalable Robotics to expand welding systems portfolio

October 8, 2022 by Mark Allinson Leave a Comment

ABB is entering into a strategic partnership with US-based startup Scalable Robotics, to enhance its portfolio of user-friendly robotic welding systems.

Through 3D vision and embedded process understanding, the Scalable Robotics technology allows customers to easily program welding robots without the need for coding.

ABB Technology Ventures (ATV), the venture capital unit of ABB, will be the lead investor in Scalable’s seed funding investment round. ABB did not disclose the level or the terms of the investment. [Read more…] about ABB invests in Scalable Robotics to expand welding systems portfolio

John Deere pilots new robotic welding solution

April 2, 2021 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

John Deere is leveraging Intel’s artificial intelligence technology to help solve a costly, age-old problem in the manufacturing welding process.

Deere is piloting a solution that uses computer vision to automatically spot common defects in the automated welding process in its manufacturing facilities.

Andy Benko, quality director, John Deere construction and forestry division, says: “Welding is a complicated process. This AI solution has the potential to help us produce our high-quality machines more efficiently than before. [Read more…] about John Deere pilots new robotic welding solution

Trumpf enters the world of automated arc welding

November 11, 2020 by Sam Francis Leave a Comment

Industrial machine tools company Trumpf has released its first automated arc welding system. The TruArc Weld 1000 comes with a collaborative robot, also known as a “cobot”. After the operator has manually guided it over a component, the cobot then automatically carries out the weld.

It is significantly more efficient than would be possible manually. With the new system, Trumpf says it is responding to the increasing lack of skilled workers and helps fabricators get started with automated welding. CE-compliant and approved by TÜV Austria, the TruArc Weld 1000 “meets the very highest safety standards”. [Read more…] about Trumpf enters the world of automated arc welding

Universal Robots powers three new welding tools at FabTech

October 25, 2019 by Sam Francis

The welding automation industry is increasingly implementing collaborative robot arms from Universal Robots.

This year’s FabTech Expo features several UR cobot powered path-processing solutions:

  • BotX Welder by Hirebotics;
  • Red-D-Arc and Airgas;
  • Vectis Automation’s Cobot Welding Tool; and
  • SnapCut by ARC Specialties.

The average age of today’s welder in the US is 55 years old, and fewer than 20 percent are under the age of 35, according to the American Welding Society. [Read more…] about Universal Robots powers three new welding tools at FabTech

Universal Robots powers Vectis Automation’s new collaborative robot welding tool

October 17, 2019 by Sam Francis

Vectis Automation has chosen Universal Robots’ UR10e cobot to power the Vectis Cobot Welding Tool launching at FabTech 2019 in Chicago.

The company says its robotic welding tool gives smaller weld shops a low-risk, low-cost solution to increase weld capacity, quality and stability.

Vectis is Latin for leverage. Leverage now extended to manufacturers seeking an easy answer to increase welding productivity amid the ongoing shortage of skilled labor. [Read more…] about Universal Robots powers Vectis Automation’s new collaborative robot welding tool

Hirebotics develops new robotic welding system

August 26, 2019 by David Edwards

Hirebotics has developed a new robotic welding system using Universal Robots machines.

The new for-hire BotX Welder – developed by Hirebotics and utilizing Universal Robots’ UR10e collaborative robot arm – lets manufacturers automate arc welding with no capital investment, handling even small batch runs not feasible for traditional automation.

Nowhere in manufacturing is the shortage of labor felt as urgently as in the welding sector, which is now facing an acute shortage of welders nationwide. [Read more…] about Hirebotics develops new robotic welding system

New lasers can weld ceramics without furnace, claim scientists

August 23, 2019 by Sam Francis

Smartphones that don’t scratch or shatter. Metal-free pacemakers. Electronics for space and other harsh environments.

These could all be made possible thanks to a new ceramic welding technology developed by a team of engineers at the University of California San Diego and the University of California Riverside.

The process, published in the August 23 issue of Science, uses an ultrafast pulsed laser to melt ceramic materials along the interface and fuse them together. [Read more…] about New lasers can weld ceramics without furnace, claim scientists

ARC Specialties selects Universal Robots for new AI-based pipe-welding system

May 1, 2019 by David Edwards

ARC Specialties says it has solved the challenge of creating repeatable full penetration pipe welds by combining artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, and the UR5 collaborative robot from Universal Robots. (See video below.)

The “unique” Artificial Intelligence Pipe Welding System debuts at ARC Specialties’ booth 705 at the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston, May 6-9.

The toughest welds to make are full penetration, single sided, V butt, pipe welds.

According to progressiveautomations.com, which is a website that explains more about actuators, it is evident that there are several ways that actuators improve weld quality and reduce costs.

An actuator is a type of motor that is responsible for moving and controlling a mechanism or system. It is operated by a source of energy – typically, electric current, hydraulic fluid pressure, or pneumatic pressure – and converts that energy into motion.

Electric resistance welding actuators when welding opens their tips just enough to move to the next position which results in time-saving, so more welding is done using the same amount of energy, saving time and reducing costs and producing high quality.  [Read more…] about Actuators to improve weld quality and reduce costs
