Audi turns to augmented reality for logistics planning

December 1, 2020 by David Edwards

Audi is turning to augmented reality to plan complex logistics processes: Virtual presentation of three dimensional holograms that are shown in their actual environment helps planners to better evaluate the future situation.

Because of this, prototypes of containers or equipment, and so on, which are elaborate to produce, are no longer necessary. Audi uses the new generation of Microsoft’s “HoloLens 2” device for this.

The “LayAR” system (short for “layout” and “augmented reality”) supports Audi logistics planners when setting up new logistics structures in an existing production hall. [Read more…] about Audi turns to augmented reality for logistics planning

High-precision watchmaking technology developer H2i wins grand prize in EPHJ awards

November 23, 2020 by David Edwards

High-precision watchmaking technology company H2i has won the grand prize in the EPHJ industry awards.

EPHJ is held every year in Geneva, Switzerland, and showcases companies in the microtechnology sector, including watchmaking, jewellery-making and medtech.

Although the 2020 edition of the EPHJ Trade Show was cancelled due to the pandemic, the traditional Grand Prix des Exposants was able to go ahead as normal as a result of the many innovations received by the Jury for initial selection. Locomation completes autonomous truck test involving three states

November 11, 2020 by Sam Francis

Locomation, a startup company providing autonomous trucking technology, has completed an on-road test that involved three different states in America.

The pilot program is intended to showcase autonomous trucking technology for the SmartBelt Coalition (SBC), a collaboration of five transportation agencies and seven research and academic institutions, located throughout Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Over the course of one week, two Locomation trucks performed three separate interstate routes under close observation from representatives of all involved organizations. [Read more…] about Locomation completes autonomous truck test involving three states

CMU researchers train autonomous drones using cross-modal simulated data

August 5, 2020 by David Edwards

To fly autonomously, drones need to understand what they perceive in the environment and make decisions based on that information. (See video below.)

A novel method developed by Carnegie Mellon University researchers allows drones to learn perception and action separately.

The two-stage approach overcomes the “simulation-to-reality gap”, and creates a way to safely deploy drones trained entirely on simulated data into real-world course navigation. [Read more…] about CMU researchers train autonomous drones using cross-modal simulated data

Nvidia offers glimpse into Silicon Valley simulator in the cloud used for autonomous car development

May 27, 2020 by David Edwards

As much of the world continues to conduct business from home, Nvidia’s autonomous test vehicles are hard at work in the cloud. (See video below.)

During the GTC 2020 keynote, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang demonstrated how Nvidia Drive technology is being developed and tested in simulation.

While physical testing is temporarily paused, the cloud-based Nvidia Drive Constellation platform makes it possible to dispatch virtual vehicles in virtual environments to continue making great progress in self-driving technology. Interview: Startup Reflect developing new solution to ‘a real industrial problem’

May 25, 2020 by David Edwards

Interview with George Papanikolopoulos, CEO of CASP, which is developing a software solution to what he describes as ‘a real industrial problem’

Reflect is one of the experiments that successfully passed to Phase II of the first Open Call in ESMERA, the EU agency that has a multimillion-euro budget to help robotic startups.

Being one of the 12 experiments that started in ESMERA in the summer of 2019, Reflect proved its concept to external evaluators and has been selected as one of the currently five final experiments in Phase II. Artificial intelligence in the real estate industry

February 3, 2020 by David Edwards

While it was once considered an advanced technology of the future, artificial intelligence is very much a present-day reality.

Thanks to inventions like self-driving cars, home assistant devices, automatic vacuum cleaners and remote home security solutions, Artificial Intelligence is on everyone’s lips.

Since AI seems to affect both the public and private sector, we started thinking about all the different ways in which it’ll shake up the real estate world. [Read more…] about Artificial intelligence in the real estate industry

Waypoint Robotics moves to larger facility to ‘meet growing demand’ for its warehouse robots

December 11, 2019 by Sam Francis

Waypoint Robotics has moved to a larger facility to meet what it says “growing demand” for its autonomous mobile robots. Among the products the company supplies is the MAV3K, an AMR with the capacity to lift 3000 lb.

The new, larger manufacturing facility in Nashua, New Hampshire. The new location features expanded space for production, design, engineering, quality control, and robot testing.

Jason Walker, CEO and co-founder of Waypoint, says: “The response for our Vector and MAV3K AMRs has been strong and we quickly outgrew our Merrimack, New Hampshire location. We need space to ramp up production as customers transition from pilot programs into scaling their robot fleets. B&R unveils new simulation tool for digital twin development

October 8, 2019 by Abdul Montaqim

B&R has integrated its “industrialPhysics” simulation tool into its Automation Studio engineering environment.

The company says the 3D simulation software greatly simplifies model-based machine development, enabling easier digital twin development.

B&R says developers can import CAD data from machine components or entire machines directly into the simulation tool, and then they can quickly and easily generate a digital twin for developing and testing the machine software.
