AI-generated images: Is this the future of art?

December 13, 2024 by Mark Allinson

Dictionary definitions of “art” are many and varied, but for people of a certain age – let’s say around 60 – art used to mean paintings and sculptures… pretty much exclusively.

But over those 60 years – starting around 30 years ago – art started to mean different things, although those “different” artistic expressions still often incorporated the traditional modes of expression – painting and sculpting.

One of those “different” things that came to constitute art was “installation art”, which is usually a relatively large-scale work – taking up one whole gallery room or more. Installation art uses mixed media to create an immersive experience for people to walk through and perhaps interact with or even be an essential part of.

Can robots learn from ‘machine dreams’?

November 12, 2024 by Mark Allinson

Scientists from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory used AI-generated images to train a robot dog in parkour, without real-world data.

Parkour is a non-competitive physical discipline where participants move through an environment using their bodies to overcome obstacles – basically like navigating an obstacle course.

CSAIL’s LucidSim system demonstrates the potential of GenAI – generative AI, or generative AI – for creating relevant robotics training data, enabling expert-level performance in complex tasks like obstacle navigation and stair climbing. [Read more…] about Can robots learn from ‘machine dreams’?

Should You Use AI-Generated Images for Your Website?

September 25, 2024 by Mark Allinson

In the last couple of years, generative artificial intelligence has been making waves. It’s able to create unique content, images, and other media in a way never possible before.

Instead of spending thousands of dollars setting up an elaborate photo shoot, you can now use AI to create beautiful images in a matter of minutes. The question is, though, should you?

If you speak to creative professionals, AI is “borrowing” styles from existing work online. There is a wide debate about whether or not this constitutes copyright infringement or not. [Read more…] about Should You Use AI-Generated Images for Your Website?

The Challenges and Potential of Computer-Generated Images

May 8, 2023 by Mark Allinson

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed the way we approach many aspects of our lives, and one area where it is making a significant impact is in image generation.

With the ability to produce highly realistic and original images, AI has opened up new possibilities for artistic expression, scientific research, and commercial applications.

However, the process of generating AI images is not without its challenges, from biases and incomplete data to the potential for unpredictable or surreal results. [Read more…] about The Challenges and Potential of Computer-Generated Images

Historical textiles in focus: IDS provides technology to preserve priceless artefacts

April 27, 2023 by Mark Allinson

New approaches to investigate damage due to environmental fluctuation on textile artefacts by image processing

Preventive conservation plays an important role in the preservation of art and cultural assets. In order to preserve their condition for as long as possible, it is essential to slow down ageing processes and evaluate factors that alter materials.

To do this, it is necessary to grasp and have an holistic understanding of the artefact. Cultural heritage science and engineering methods for understanding material behaviour require an interdisciplinary approach.

Textiles are among the most sensitive art and cultural heritage objects. In the course of their production and handling, their presentation and storage, they are often exposed to influences that can have a damaging effect. Nidec launches two new robot cameras for hobbing and broaching machines

December 22, 2022 by Mai Tao

Nidec Machine Tool has launched two new robot cameras for hobbing and broaching machines to help automate visual inspections of cutting tools.

Robot Camera “Speed”, visual inspection equipment for cutting tools (hobbing machines) to process gears and other components, and Robot Camera “Max”, visual inspection equipment for broaching machines.

The company says the two robot cameras can reduce tooling inspection time to “less than 1/10 of its current length”. [Read more…] about Nidec launches two new robot cameras for hobbing and broaching machines

How Data Annotation Speeds Up the Development of AI Robots in the Agriculture Industry

October 11, 2022 by Mark Allinson

AI has made the lives of companies across industries a lot easier since it allows them to automate a lot of time-consuming and mundane processes.

However, these robots need to be trained with data that allows them to recognize and function in the physical world. This is where data annotation services come in.

Today we will take a look at how data annotation speeds up the development of AI robots and the types of data annotation that are necessary. [Read more…] about How Data Annotation Speeds Up the Development of AI Robots in the Agriculture Industry

How to Use Old Photo Restoration Software

February 21, 2022 by David Edwards

Looking back on old images is a priceless feeling which brings back happy recollections of shared memories. Many have large photo collections grouped in photo albums or heaped in a cabinet or an old box.

People used to have to go through tedious procedures to take images and then receive a tangible copy of them. Before now, photographs could not be saved in a storage device or a digital device. Now, you can use an old photo restoration software to fine-tune them.

Finding old storage full of lovely images brings back memories and make you feel like you’ve discovered a hidden treasure. However, as you examine them more closely, you may be disappointed by the deterioration that you notice in the photographs. [Read more…] about How to Use Old Photo Restoration Software
