LK Metrology launches new range of robotic measuring arms

September 22, 2023 by David Edwards

LK Metrology has launched a new range of portable 6-axis and 7-axis measuring arms to replace the 34 original versions it introduced in 2021.

Unlike their predecessors, 6-axis Freedom Arm v2 products offer full IP54 protection from water splashes and the ingress of dust and particles, delivering reliable, repeatable, 3D tactile inspection and measurement in harsh industrial environments.

Available also is a new range of 21 stainless steel-tipped probes with a stainless steel or carbon fibre body, as well as updated RDS software v6.2 running on Windows for communicating with the arm via WiFi or USB. [Read more…] about LK Metrology launches new range of robotic measuring arms

Danfoss installs 3D scanner robot that can measure components to within a micron

July 23, 2022 by David Edwards

Danfoss Power Solutions, a supplier of mobile and industrial hydraulics as well as electric powertrain systems, has invested in an advanced 3D scanner robot for its joystick manufacturing lines in Nordborg, Denmark.

The company says the new device is boosting inspection routines by measuring component dimensions to “micron-level precision, providing customers with even higher product quality”.

Danfoss Power Solutions’ Nordborg facility manufactures thousands of joystick variants for off-highway vehicles, such as forestry machines, harvesters, cranes, tractors and more. With the new 3D scanner robot, operators can tell immediately if a joystick component is within specifications. Applied Automation Technologies wins software contract with leading aircraft manufacturer

January 26, 2022 by Mark Allinson

Applied Automation Technologies has secured what it describes as “a major software contract” with a leading North American aircraft manufacturer.

The agreement involves the integration of AAT’s CAPPSNC software to directly interface with controllers on large CNC machines to provide dimensional metrology data for CMM reports, adaptive work offsets, and adaptive tool offsets for 3-5 axis closed-loop manufacturing.

Ray Karadayi, president and CEO of Applied Automation Technologies, says: “This CAPPSNC software is truly Factory 4.0 smart manufacturing technology because it is using metrology information throughout the manufacturing process for adaptive control.” [Read more…] about Applied Automation Technologies wins software contract with leading aircraft manufacturer

Hexagon unveils automated platform to accelerate autonomous robotic quality assurance

December 16, 2021 by Mark Allinson

Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division, which supplies smart manufacturing technologies to giants from Volkswagen to Boeing, has unveiled its HxGN Robotic Automation, which it describes as a “pioneering robotic programming and control software” that enables non-specialist quality professionals to program industrial robots to perform fully automated quality inspection.

The platform enables manufacturers to equip greenfield factories or retrofit existing production lines with state-of-the-art autonomous optical inspection cells, accelerating time to market by eliminating historic bottlenecks while providing more complete data direct from the production line as products are made.

HxGN says its robotic automation enables manufacturers to accelerate adoption of Industry 4.0 by intelligently devising optimal inspection routines in a single step; a task that would typically demand significant time and attention from both a metrology and robotics professional. New Scale Robotics gains Certified System Integrator status from Universal Robots

April 12, 2021 by David Edwards

New Scale Robotics is now a Certified System Integrator (CSI) for Universal Robots. This enables New Scale to sell and deploy UR collaborative robots with its Q-Span Workstation Kits for small part measurement.

The Q-Span Workstation Kit is a UR+ Certified Application Kit, designed and manufactured by New Scale Robotics to work with the Universal Robots e-Series collaborative robots (cobots).

It automates the tedious process of manually measuring small parts for quality control and recording the data for statistical analysis. [Read more…] about New Scale Robotics gains Certified System Integrator status from Universal Robots

Laser interferometry: An enabling technology for optimized automated manufacturing

May 12, 2020 by David Edwards

By Tyler Steele, product manager – laser interferometers, Zygo

In this article, precision Beryllium mirror manufacturer Cambridge Technology explains how the use of interferometry hardware and software solutions has streamlined its manufacturing processes and added efficiencies as well as time and cost-savings across the company.

Technological advances over recent years have elevated metrology from being a “necessary evil” in manufacturing scenarios to enabling technologies, allowing the measurement of previously impossible part characteristics and therefore driving innovation across numerous industry sectors.

It is arguable that best-in-class metrology solutions are the catalyst that drive the trend towards miniaturization, higher precision, faster throughput, and fewer rejects.

As the old adage goes, “If you can’t measure it, you can’t make it”, but if you can measure to the required accuracy repeatably, then the sky is the limit in terms of producing cutting-edge parts and components. Overcoming metrology bottlenecks in additive manufacturing

April 13, 2020 by David Edwards

By Eric Felkel, product manager optical profilers, Zygo Corporation

Undoubtedly there are many benefits associated with the use of additive manufacturing as a production technology.

Across industries, manufacturers exploit the fact that through the use of additive manufacturing they can not only build complex parts – in one piece – which were previously impossible, but they can also build stronger, lighter weight parts, reduce material consumption, and benefit from assembly component consolidation across a range of applications.

These advantages have been well documented during the last 10-20 years as additive manufacturing has emerged as a truly disruptive technology for not just prototyping but also production, and are invariably seen as being enabled by the additive hardware that builds the parts.
