Factories can save up to 90 per cent in valve monitoring costs with wireless IoT sensors

October 29, 2019 by Editor

Factories and plants in industries – such as chemical processing, pulp and paper, water and waste-water treatment, have seen the benefits of remote valve monitoring.

Traditional retrofitted monitoring solutions, however, are costly and slow to deploy for factories with thousands of manual valves of different types.

There is a more cost-effective alternative – factories have evidenced a 90 percent reduction in retrofitting investment, by using industry-grade wireless sensors and Industrial IoT technologies. CNC Machining Services: One Machine, Many Functions

October 23, 2019 by Liv

An overview of CNC machining services, contributed by RapidDirect

Computer numeric controlled machining (CNC) is a manufacturing process, first introduced between the 1940s and 1950s.

The process involves different accurate cutting instruments that remove material from the item – contingent upon the Computer Aided Drawing (CAD), with cutting edge programming tools can control.

This manufacturing process helps you in designing a sketch for production with the opportunity of altering and making changes. [Read more…] about CNC Machining Services: One Machine, Many Functions

SICK launches new superfast camera system for industrial processes

October 22, 2019 by David Edwards

SICK has launched a new superfast camera system for industrial environments.

The sensor specialist says the new “EventCam” can eliminate spontaneous errors in the manufacturing process.

This industrial-grade 2D camera brings clarity when unexplained gripping, handling, and positioning problems arise or when unreproducible installation errors or machine downtimes occur. [Read more…] about SICK launches new superfast camera system for industrial processes

Universal Robots powers Vectis Automation’s new collaborative robot welding tool

October 17, 2019 by Sam Francis

Vectis Automation has chosen Universal Robots’ UR10e cobot to power the Vectis Cobot Welding Tool launching at FabTech 2019 in Chicago.

The company says its robotic welding tool gives smaller weld shops a low-risk, low-cost solution to increase weld capacity, quality and stability.

Vectis is Latin for leverage. Leverage now extended to manufacturers seeking an easy answer to increase welding productivity amid the ongoing shortage of skilled labor. [Read more…] about Universal Robots powers Vectis Automation’s new collaborative robot welding tool

Universal Robots ‘future-proofs’ production processes at Vietnamese manufacturer with collaborative robots

October 15, 2019 by Mai Tao

Universal Robots has helped Vietnam-based Vinacomin Motor Industry Joint Stock Company “future-proof” its production processes with collaborative robots.

VMIC is a subsidiary of the Vinacomin Group, a state-owned coal and mining giant.

VMIC, one of the first state-owned manufacturers to deploy cobots, has seen productivity increase two to three times, with improved product quality, leading to a 50 to 60 percent rise in orders. Special feature: Tour of Airbus’ advanced manufacturing facility in Germany

October 8, 2019 by Abdul Montaqim

Airbus is in the midst of revolutionary changes that may lead the aerospace giant to spend more than $1 billion on robotics, automation and digitalisation technologies across its global operation in the next few years – that’s if the advances at the company’s Hamburg, Germany facility are duplicated in all its facilities worldwide.

The multinational consortium could end up spending a lot more: for example, the final stages of its internal assembly is labour-intensive, with all equipment – seats and luggage compartments – installed by humans. If this stage is roboticised, as the company’s chief operating officer has suggested, it would fundamentally change the current production process, something which he is envisaging anyway.

Robotic technologies have already transformed the way Airbus manufactures the exterior shell of its planes. Whereas, in the past, human workers would have drilled the 6,000 or more external holes in the fuselage of a typical commercial airliner, now, robots not only drill them, they also rivet or fasten them.

Perhaps surprisingly to some readers, the drilling was done by humans all these years until now, and even now, it’s only at the Hamburg facility that robots have been brought in.

Last week, Airbus provided more insight into its highly automated aircraft manufacturing facility in Hamburg – a place called Finkenwerder, to be precise, at what’s described as a “private airport”.

The aerospace jumbo invited a small group of journalists, including one from Robotics and Automation News, for a visit to the vast, sprawling complex, and a detailed, guided tour of Hangar 245, the advanced manufacturing facility in which aircraft belonging to the “A320 Family”, as Airbus describes them, are currently being assembled.  [Read more…] about Special feature: Tour of Airbus’ advanced manufacturing facility in Germany

US manufacturing sector faces ‘workforce crisis’, says Manufacturing Institute

October 8, 2019 by Sam Francis

The US is facing a “workforce crisis”, according to the Manufacturing Institute.

The Institute, and the education and workforce partner of the National Association of Manufacturers, kicked off a month-long celebration of modern manufacturing last week on Manufacturing Day – October 4th.

Held annually on the first Friday in October, MFG Day helps show the reality of modern manufacturing careers in an industry that is vital to our economy. [Read more…] about US manufacturing sector faces ‘workforce crisis’, says Manufacturing Institute

Controlling complexity: Powerful new tech tools are bringing lean manufacturing principles to life

October 7, 2019 by David Edwards

By Dan McKiernan, president of eFlex Systems

Lean manufacturing principles and practices aimed at minimizing waste and maximizing productivity, have been shaping the manufacturing sector for decades now.

The necessary end-goal for manufacturers is to ensure that products are built correctly, every time, even when changes are made in-process.

While this goal is nothing new, the rise of complexity and customization challenges presents a constant counterpressure against the continuing push for improved consistency and quality. Bosch receives massive €13 billion worth of electromobility orders

October 4, 2019 by David Edwards

When it comes to electromobility, Bosch says it is “driving in the fast lane”.

Electromobility is a general term referring to electric-powered drivetrains designed to shift vehicle design away from the use of fossil fuels and carbon gas emissions.

Bosch claims that “no other company has as much expertise” in this domain. The giant company has long been one of the world’s leading suppliers of existing automotive technologies.

Bosch’s relatively newly acquired expertise in electromobility is already paying off: since the beginning of 2018, Bosch says it has won electromobility orders worth approximately €13 billion, including production projects for electrical powertrains for passenger cars and light trucks.
