Common ground: Are mobile robots technologically the same as autonomous cars?

January 8, 2025 by Mark Allinson

For a long time, I’ve been wondering if an autonomous mobile robot – those small wheeled boxes you see moving shelf units and other items in warehouses – could be increased in size, then fitted with a car chassis and body, with a couple of seats inside, and marketed as a road-going, passenger-carrying autonomous vehicle.

Yes, of course, some serious design refinements of the sketched out idea above would be required and a torrent of regulations would have to be navigated, but beyond that, the internal technologies would not need to change much because, fundamentally, they are the same. Right? Or not?

Actually, I don’t know. I’m not an engineer. But from what’s called a high-level perspective, both AMRs and autonomous vehicles are essentially the same thing or at least perform the same function – carry goods and people around autonomously. A Look at the Different Types of Vehicle Accidents

July 29, 2024 by Mark Allinson

When you think of a car accident, you probably envision two vehicles tangled together. However, vehicle accidents can vary, as sometimes, only one car is involved.

Other collisions may involve multiple vehicles. Even the type of vehicle can vary since not all collisions involve only cars.

Today, we’re identifying common vehicle accident types so you’re in a better position to hopefully avoid being in a collision. Understanding the various types of vehicle accidents can also make it easier to file an insurance claim if you’re involved in a car wreck.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Building Your Own Business Website

July 29, 2024 by Mark Allinson

One of the first things everyone thinks about before setting off on a business venture is the website. This is the official online hub of your company.

The way a customer reacts to your products or services is going to largely be determined by how they react to the website – how does it make them feel, what does it tell them, and how does it tell it? This is why choosing the right website builder and including all the necessary pages is so important.

But not every business is savvy enough to put in the right amount of effort. According to a recent study, nearly 50% of all US small businesses didn’t have a website, and for many that do, only a handful of hours are put into perfecting it. MIT unveils dexterous robotic hands that can ‘manipulate thousands of objects with ease’

December 8, 2021 by Mark Allinson

MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory has revealed a dexterous robotic hand that scientists say can “manipulate thousands of objects with ease”. (See video below.)

At just one year old, a baby is more dexterous than a robot. Sure, machines can do more than just pick up and put down objects, but we’re not quite there as far as replicating a natural pull towards exploratory or sophisticated dexterous manipulation goes.

OpenAI gave it a try with “Dactyl” (meaning “finger” from the Greek word daktylos), using their humanoid robot hand to solve a Rubik’s cube with software that’s a step towards more general AI, and a step away from the common single-task mentality. DeepMind created “RGB-Stacking,” a vision-based system that challenges a robot to learn how to grab items and stack them.

Scientists from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), in the ever-present quest to get machines to replicate human abilities, created a framework that’s more scaled up: a system that can reorient over two thousand different objects, with the robotic hand facing both upwards and downwards.
