ABB offers augmented reality on a smartphone to simplify robot installations

August 20, 2020 by David Edwards

ABB has launched its new RobotStudio Augmented Reality viewer to provide a “quick and convenient way of visualizing where and how robotic automation can fit into your process using a smartphone or tablet”.

Discovering whether a robot is right for your application has never been easier following the launch of ABB’s new Augmented Reality viewer, which has been added to ABB’s powerful PC-based RobotStudio offline programming software.

The RobotStudio AR Viewer app can be used to test any model created in RobotStudio, enabling users to get an idea of the size and scale of a robot or robot cell and how it can be deployed on a factory floor to fit around any existing production equipment. The Advantages of Including Facial Recognition in a Mobile App

August 13, 2020 by Polly

Imagine the benefits to your business of including facial recognition in a mobile app. Let’s start with this idea:

Dale Carnegie said, “A person’s name is to that person the sweetest, most important sound in any language.”

US targets Chinese tech giants for bans and sales

August 7, 2020 by Mark Allinson

The United States is targeting a range of Chinese-owned tech giants for bans or sales in a bid to put pressure on its economic rival.

The administration of President Donald Trump appears to be conflating “national security” issues with economic measures which it believes are fair while others consider protectionist.

Trump has signed executive orders which may see the sale within 45 days of video-sharing app TikTok to Microsoft. Another app in the administration’s bad books is WeChat, according to the South China Morning Post. [Read more…] about US targets Chinese tech giants for bans and sales

Bosch launches app to give electric vehicle drivers access to 150,000 charging spots in 16 European countries

June 15, 2020 by David Edwards

Bosch has launched an app – Charge My EV – that provides electric vehicle drivers with access to “150,000 electric vehicle charging spots in 16 European countries”.

The company says this makes it one of the biggest pan-European recharging networks.

Bosch says it has set itself the goal of putting an end to the “recharging muddle” where drivers of electric cars have an average of six recharging apps on their smartphones, and have to juggle as many as five recharging access cards. SICK launches versatile new software development platform

February 22, 2020 by David Edwards

Sensors giant SICK has launched a new software development platform that it says is versatile enough to enable programmers to create solutions for the entire industrial process.

SICK says its AppSpace (see video below) offers system integrators and original equipment manufacturers the “freedom and flexibility” to independently develop application solutions that are tailored to the specific needs and requirements of any task.

Whether it’s designing the ideal online user interface, selecting the most suitable programming technology, or distributing the sensor app on various SICK sensors, SICK says AppSpace gives developers the power to develop their own customized solutions. The mundane revolution: Unexpected innovations in robotics

December 5, 2019 by David Edwards

By Rhys Davies, product manager at Canonical, publishers of Ubuntu

Today’s headlines tend to focus on the weird and wonderful robots of this world: the Hollywood Terminators or mechanical dogs developed by Boston Dynamics and other Silicon Valley start-ups.

The greatest innovations, however, can often be found in the more mundane corners of our society, within the industries and environments people least expect.

It’s happened with medicine and the discovery of penicillin, for example, while Archimedes had his eureka moment in the bath. [Read more…] about The mundane revolution: Unexpected innovations in robotics
