Bosch plans to invest €2.5 billion into AI agent technology over the next two years

June 25, 2025 by Sam Francis

Bosch, one of the world’s largest industrial conglomerates, says it “continues to set the pace” in the application and development of artificial intelligence (AI): by the end of 2027, the technology company will invest more than €2.5 billion in this field.

AI is an innovation booster and growth driver for Bosch products and services. It makes automated driving safer, reliably checks quality in manufacturing, and makes everyday life easier for consumers at work, in their free time, and at home.

“The breakthroughs in AI make it possible to open up completely new chapters in technology, accelerate the development of innovations, and turn these into business,” says Stefan Hartung, chairman of the Bosch board of management. DB Cargo and Bosch develop fully automated shunting locomotive for series production

April 1, 2025 by David Edwards

As Europe’s largest freight operating company, DB Cargo is systematically driving forward the digitalisation and automation of rail freight transport. An important part of the progress it is making is the automation of shunting in formation yards.

Freight trains are taken apart, wagons sorted and new trains put together at the yards. The shunting locomotives required for these movements are still controlled manually in most cases. In the future, fully automated hump locomotives will be used.

The automation technology facilitating this innovation is currently being developed and made ready for series production with the two Bosch subsidiaries Bosch Engineering and ITK Engineering as strong industrial partners. Nikon sells its 1,000th 3D printer to Bosch

November 14, 2024 by Mark Allinson

Nikon SLM Solutions says that the 1000th system it has produced, an NXG XII 600, has now been acquired – by Bosch. (SLM stands for “selective laser melting”, a technique for 3D printing or additive manufacturing.)

German industrial giant Bosch will utilize the milestone NXG XII 600 to “elevate the production” of critical parts for powertrain technology, hydrogen, and electric drive applications at its 3D-Printing Manufacturing and Processing Center in Nuremberg, Germany.

This center specializes in additive manufacturing (AM) for both prototyping and serial production, harnessing the power of Nikon SLM’s technology to meet growing production demands. [Read more…] about Nikon sells its 1,000th 3D printer to Bosch

Bosch to use generative AI in manufacturing

February 14, 2024 by Mark Allinson

Bosch is piloting generative AI and foundation models in manufacturing. In initial projects in two Bosch plants in Germany, generative AI creates synthetic images in order to develop and scale AI solutions for optical inspection and optimize existing AI models.

Bosch expects that this will reduce the time needed for planning, launching, and ramping up AI applications “from the current six to 12 months to just a few weeks”. Following successful piloting, this service for generating synthetic data is to be offered to all Bosch locations.

There are sound economic reasons for this move: depending on the size of the plant and type of production, artificial intelligence can be used to achieve productivity gains and six- to seven-figure cost savings – per year and plant. [Read more…] about Bosch to use generative AI in manufacturing

German industry proposes new development standard for safe automated driving

February 14, 2024 by David Edwards

Four years ago, the German automotive industry joined forces with 21 partners in a project to develop the world’s first structures for the verification of safety standards for “automated vehicles” – also referred to as autonomous or self-driving vehicles – in an urban environment. The results of the joint Verification and Validation Methods (VVM) project are now available.

The findings of the pre-competitive research project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and initiated by the VDA flagship initiative autonomous and connected driving, were discussed in detail at the final presentation at the Carl Benz Arena in Stuttgart.

The higher the level of automated driving and the more complex a system’s area of application, the more factors need to be taken into account during development. The first SAE Level 3 systems for freeway driving and an SAE Level 4 system for driverless parking have already been approved. Bosch to acquire 12 percent of Husqvarna

February 9, 2023 by Mark Allinson

Bosch has agreed to acquire shares in the long-established Swedish company Husqvarna. The acquisition will increase its shareholding to roughly 12 percent in the company’s share capital in total. Numbers were not disclosed.

Husqvarna is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm. In acquiring these shares today, Bosch intends to strengthen the battery alliance between the two companies.

Husqvarna also includes the Gardena subsidiary and its Flymo brand, both of which are also partners in the Bosch Power Tools division’s “Power for All Alliance”. [Read more…] about Bosch to acquire 12 percent of Husqvarna

Mercedes-Benz and Bosch launch ‘world’s first’ driverless parking system approved for commercial use

December 4, 2022 by Mark Allinson

Mercedes-Benz and Bosch have reached an important milestone on the way to automated driving: Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority has approved their highly automated parking system for use in the P6 parking garage run by Apcoa at Stuttgart Airport.

This makes it the world’s first highly automated driverless parking function (SAE Level 4) to be officially approved for commercial use. The technological advancement of automated driving plays a key role in the mobility of the future.

With the vehicle and infrastructure taking over driving and manoeuvring, drivers will be able to turn their attention to other things, instead of time spent looking for a parking space and manoeuvring in tight parking garages.
