The threat of the spread of viruses is not something new, but the recent COVID-19 pandemic has sparked many responses, socially, medically, and technologically.

Managers of large, public buildings are under increasing pressure to disinfect ‘high-touch’ areas more deeply, often, due to the virus, with minimum staffing levels.

Toyota venture fund invests in robotic kitchen startup

Toyota AI Ventures, Toyota’s early-stage venture capital fund, has decided to invest in YPC Technologies, a robotic kitchen startup based in Montreal, Canada.

The funding follows YPC Technologies’ participation in the 2020 Toyota AI Ventures “call for innovation” focused on smart, connected cities that launched earlier this year in partnership with Toyota Research Institute – Advanced Development (TRI-AD) and Toyota Research Institute (TRI).

Toyota AI Ventures views cities as a platform for innovation, and this year’s global call for innovation focused on attracting and investing in early-stage startups that are building solutions for smart and connected cities in the areas of artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomy, mobility, cloud, or data. Fetch Robotics partners with Vargo to launch integrated fulfillment solution

Fetch Robotics, a warehouse and cloud robotics company, has agreed a partnership with Vargo, a provider of warehouse execution software, to launch an integrated fulfillment solution.

The new solution will combine Fetch’s autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) with the Continuous Order Fulfillment Engine (COFE), Vargo’s warehouse execution system (WES), to enable warehouse customers to optimize order fulfillment in real time.

ABB launches ‘fastest ever’ robot-based press automation solution

ABB has launched its “fastest ever” robot-based press automation solution.

The company has extended its range of ABB IRB 760 handling robots with new press tending model, the IRB 760PT, which it says offers “fast and flexible performance for automotive press automation”.

The new IRB 760PT is aimed at press automation applications in the automotive industry, and is a “flexible” press tending solution offering 25 per cent faster cycle times compared to other robot-based press automation solutions, claims ABB. RE2 Robotics achieves 50 percent hiring growth despite pandemic

RE2 Robotics, or “Resquared Robotics”, a developer of intelligent mobile manipulation systems, announced today that the Company has already reached its 2020 hiring goal of increasing its staff by 50 percent.

In particular, 83 percent of the new hires were engineers from a variety of disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, and software engineering.

In addition, the Company has added to its operations team with the hiring of a head of talent, director of IT, and accountant, and has augmented its production team with the addition of a CNC machinist and lab assistant. Piestro partners with Kiwibot to bring ‘automated artisan pizzas’ to your door

Piestro, a start-up automating artisan pizza creation, is partnering with Kiwibot, the robotics company providing “affordable and accessible” delivery services, to offer consumers a touchless, contactless pizza delivery experience.

The partnership follows a successful campaign to raise finance on crowdfunding platform StartEngine, where Piestro had an oversubscription of investor interest.

Japanese construction giant Obayashi to integrate SafeAI technology to make its vehicles autonomous

SafeAI, a technology platform for autonomous heavy equipment, and Obayashi Corporation, a Japanese-based global leader in construction, have agreed a partnership to create autonomous construction sites, beginning with a pilot program on a US test site.

Volkswagen orders staggering 800 ABB robots to build its new electric vehicles

ABB has received a massive order for 800 industrial robots from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to support production of a new generation of electric vehicles at its plant in Hannover, Germany.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is modernizing its Hannover factory and is installing state-of-the-art facilities to build the all-electric ID.
