GM and LG Energy Solution to pioneer LMR battery cell technology

May 15, 2025 by Mai Tao

General Motors and LG Energy Solution will commercialize lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic battery cells for future GM electric trucks and full-size SUVs, in a new battery technology breakthrough.

This builds on a partnership between the two companies to develop prismatic battery cell technology and related chemistries, and on GM’s long legacy of American ingenuity that’s produced innovations like the small-block V8 engine, OnStar connected vehicle services and hands-free Super Cruise.

GM aims to become the first automaker to deploy LMR batteries in EVs. Ultium Cells, a GM and LG Energy Solution joint venture, plans to start commercial production of LMR prismatic cells in the United States by 2028, with pre-production expected to begin at an LG Energy Solution facility by late 2027. Understanding the Importance of Hands-On Learning in Science and Technology

April 10, 2025 by Mark Allinson

Memorizing theories is useful, but real learning happens through hands-on experience. From engineering to medicine, applying knowledge builds problem-solving skills and prepares students for real-world challenges.

As industries evolve with robotics, AI, and space exploration, the need for practical learning is greater than ever. But in an increasingly digital world, how do we ensure students get the experience they need?

In this blog, we will share why hands-on learning is crucial in science and technology, how online education integrates practical experience, and what the future holds for experiential learning. [Read more…] about Understanding the Importance of Hands-On Learning in Science and Technology

Common ground: Are mobile robots technologically the same as autonomous cars?

January 8, 2025 by Mark Allinson

For a long time, I’ve been wondering if an autonomous mobile robot – those small wheeled boxes you see moving shelf units and other items in warehouses – could be increased in size, then fitted with a car chassis and body, with a couple of seats inside, and marketed as a road-going, passenger-carrying autonomous vehicle.

Yes, of course, some serious design refinements of the sketched out idea above would be required and a torrent of regulations would have to be navigated, but beyond that, the internal technologies would not need to change much because, fundamentally, they are the same. Right? Or not?

Actually, I don’t know. I’m not an engineer. But from what’s called a high-level perspective, both AMRs and autonomous vehicles are essentially the same thing or at least perform the same function – carry goods and people around autonomously. Robotic perception continues to evolve in the warehouse, says Exotec

December 18, 2024 by Anika Haque

AI and ML are helping warehouse robots better understand their environment and how to interact with it, helping them to operate more effectively

Robots continue to make their mark in the warehouse, working alongside humans, and as they evolve, so do their perception systems.

According to Exotec, the growth of AI and machine learning is playing an instrumental role in driving this improvement, as robots are continuing to adapt to their surroundings and fine-tune their operations.

Robotic perception is the ability of a robot to perceive, comprehend and reason about the environment in which it operates. Perception is the first step in robotic movement, enabling it to make correct decisions when complimenting or in partnership with humans in the warehouse.
