AutoStore unveils new robot for its warehouse automation system

January 14, 2022 by David Edwards

AutoStore, probably the leading provider of robotic automated storage and retrieval systems for warehouses, has launched its R5+ Robot.

The newest addition to the AutoStore Robot fleet will enable warehouses to manage larger items, thanks to the R5+’s ability to handle Bins up to 425 mm, the tallest Bins available in the AutoStore system.

Until now, this has been a premium feature possible only with AutoStore B1 Robot installations. The R5+ is now available for operations globally. [Read more…] about AutoStore unveils new robot for its warehouse automation system

BMW partners with Seoul Robotics to launch ‘Level 5’ control tower

January 4, 2022 by Mai Tao

Seoul Robotics, a robotics perception company, has introduced what it describes as a “Level 5 Control Tower” (LV5 CTRL TWR), a mesh network of sensors and computers on infrastructure that guides vehicles autonomously rather than having to place any sensors on an individual vehicle.

This “revolutionary technology” – which is said to enable non-autonomous vehicles to be controlled autonomously – is in the final stages of testing with automaker BMW and preparing for implementation to automate last-mile fleet logistics at their manufacturing facility in Munich.

Beyond original equipment manufacturers, the system has the potential to transform operations for a wide range of business applications ranging from vehicle distribution centers to car rental companies and trucking logistics. Some predictions for the year ahead

December 30, 2021 by Mark Allinson

How many among us would want to make predictions when the coronavirus in a variety of new forms is still wreaking havoc on all our lives? Not many.

Nonetheless, there are some who have sent in some thoughts about what they believe will be key trends to watch out for in 2022. Below are a selection of them.

“The fallout from Covid-19 prevention measures, the process of transitioning from pandemic to endemic disease, and global political tensions weigh heavily on the coming year’s fortunes,” says Stuart Carlaw, Chief Research Officer at ABI Research. Volarious demonstrates drone that can accompany boats

December 30, 2021 by Mark Allinson

Volarious has demonstrated a new tethered drone system that enables the DJI Mavic 2 drone to autonomously take off, follow, and land safely on small vessels.

Firefighters and police drone team has been using the V-Line tethered system for the Mavic 2 drone in a variety of situation on land. The Volarious product is called the V-Line boat mode.

It can also be used in coastline surveillance, search and rescue operations. A drone can take off, follow, and land on small vessels autonomously while providing a real-time elevated view of high resolution thermal and RGB images and video streams at the comfort of the cabin. Eavesdropping on our thoughts helps create robots like us

December 30, 2021 by Mark Allinson

Can intelligence be taught to robots? Advances in physical reservoir computing, a technology that makes sense of brain signals, could contribute to creating artificial intelligence machines that think like us.

In Applied Physics Letters, from AIP Publishing, researchers from the University of Tokyo outline how a robot could be taught to navigate through a maze by electrically stimulating a culture of brain nerve cells connected to the machine.

These nerve cells, or neurons, were grown from living cells and acted as the physical reservoir for the computer to construct coherent signals. [Read more…] about Eavesdropping on our thoughts helps create robots like us

Automating cricket ball production: Global cricket ball manufacturer uses automation with a vision system for efficiency and upskilling

December 30, 2021 by Mark Allinson

Under the laws of cricket, it is illegal for players to rub any substance other than saliva and sweat onto the ball, let alone scuffing it with their fingernails. Similarly, strict rules apply to the manufacturing of cricket balls.

Here’s how cricket ball manufacturer Kookaburra designed its first ever machine tending robotic system to produce the perfect ball, with the help of industrial robot supplier, TM Robotics and MAP Services, Australian partner for TM Robotics and Shibaura Machine.

Machine tending is repetitive work. The job of loading and unloading machines with parts or materials are usually done by humans. In the production of cricket balls, workers would place covers – the outside leather of cricket balls – onto trays after being pressed into shape to form half of a cricket ball. These trays are then placed into a rack and moved to the next process – trimming excess leather from the pressed cover.
