New battery promises to increase range of electric vehicles by five times

A company called Innolith says it is developing “the world’s first 1,000 Wh/kg rechargeable battery”. 

Under development in the company’s German laboratory, the new “Innolith Energy Battery” would be capable of powering an electric vehicle for “over 1,000 kilometers on a single charge”.

Renault pilots large-scale vehicle-to-grid charging from electric vehicles

Groupe Renault is beginning the first large-scale pilot schemes in vehicle-to-grid charging, also called reversible electric charging.

A fleet of fifteen Zoe vehicles with vehicle-to-grid charging will be introduced in Europe over the course of 2019 to develop the company’s future portfolio in reversible charging and lay the groundwork for future standards.

These pilot schemes began in Utrecht (the Netherlands) in an ecosystem developed by We Drive Solar and on Porto Santo Island, in Madeira, Portugal, with Empresa de Electricidade da Madeira. More pilot schemes will be introduced in France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and Denmark.

Alstom offering fully electric bus tours in Italy

Aptis, the 100% electric bus from Alstom, is in Italy, after touring Spain, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. The tour started from Florence, in the splendid setting of the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella. It will tour six Italian cities up until May.

Aptis will be in passenger service in the Tuscan capital, free of charge, for 13 days and will be operated in collaboration with ATAF. It will cover seven different circuits, from the centre to the periphery.

Since the prototype was presented in March 2017, more than 40,000 kilometres have been covered in real operating conditions by four test vehicles in Europe.

Free2Move Paris extends its car sharing service to suburb

Starting this month, Free2Move Paris will be making its free-floating cars available to users in the inner Paris, France, suburb of Issy-les-Moulineaux.

After opening in the Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes park areas, the fleet’s expansion to Issy-les-Moulineaux is part of an assertive strategy to boost service coverage.

Free2Move is a free-floating car-sharing service where users can park for free in authorised parking spaces and designated electric vehicle spaces (ex- Autolib). There are 1,700 such spaces in Paris, and 125 in Issy-les-Moulineaux.

Volkswagen establishes new joint venture for connected services

Volkswagen Brand China and its Chinese joint venture FAW-Volkswagen are scaling up their cooperation in the area of digitalisation and connectivity.

MOS Intelligent Connectivity Technology Co. Ltd., a joint venture between Volkswagen Group China and FAW-Volkswagen, will be established in the Chinese city of Chengdu.

The partners are investing a total of RMB 1 billion in the company that will operate under the MOSI brand (Mobile Online Services Intelligent).

ZF buys major stake in mobility provider 2getthere

ZF Friedrichshafen AG has acquired a 60 percent share of 2getthere B.V., which offers automated transport systems and is located in Utrecht/Netherlands.

2getthere’s applications range from driverless electric transport systems at airports, business and theme parks to dedicated urban transport infrastructures.

With this strategic investment, ZF is executing its Next Generation Mobility strategy to strengthen its foothold in the Mobility as a Service and automated guided vehicle growth markets.

Hyundai and Kia invest $300 million in Indian mobility service provider Ola

Hyundai Motor Group and Ola – one of the world’s largest ride-hailing platforms – have announced a strategic partnership under which Hyundai and Kia will invest a total of USD 300 million in Ola.

The three companies will collaborate on developing unique fleet and mobility solutions, building India-specific electric vehicles and infrastructure, as well as nurturing best in class opportunities and offerings for aspiring driver partners with customised vehicles, on the Ola platform.

As part of the strategic collaboration, the companies have agreed to co-create solutions to operate and manage fleet vehicles, marking the Group’s first foray into the industry, as they expand operations from automobile manufacturing and sales to total fleet solutions.

Wabco and SmartDrive partner on recording vehicle safety incidents

Wabco Holdings Inc., a global supplier of braking control systems, has collaborated with SmartDrive Systems, Inc., a video-based safety and transportation intelligence provider, to provide video recording for safety incidents.

This new service captures safety-related incidents by combining the SmartDrive SR4 video telematics platform with the Wabco OnLaneALERT lane departure warning system.

Vehicle fleets will be able to add this service without investing in additional cameras, and have access to a video-enabled active safety suite.

Optimus Ride to launch self-driving vehicle service in New York and California

Optimus Ride, a self-driving vehicle technology company, plans to launch its self-driving systems in New York.

The initial rollout will be at two sites:

  1. the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a 300-acre modern industrial park with over 400 manufacturing businesses and 9,000 people working on site; and
  2. Paradise Valley Estates, a private 80-acre, nonprofit Life Plan Community located in Fairfield, California.

Volvo Cars to impose 180 kph speed limit on all cars

Volvo Cars is sending a strong signal about the dangers of speeding and will limit the top speed on all its cars to 180 kph from 2020.

The company’s Vision 2020, which aims for no one to be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by 2020, is one of the most ambitious safety visions in the automotive industry.

But realising that technology alone will not get it all the way to zero, Volvo Cars is now broadening its scope to include a focus on driver behaviour.
