Retail giant Gap improves supply chain with Kindred ‘Sort’ robots

June 12, 2020 by Sam Francis

Retail giant Gap says it has improved its supply chain output by implementing robots supplied by Kindred. (See video below.)

The system Kindred has supplied uses industrial robotic arms originally manufactured by Fanuc integrated into a solution called “Sort”.

Gap says that it has been “faced with an unprecedented surge in e-commerce and an extreme workforce disruption” which persuaded it that “now is the time for artificial intelligence and robotics solutions to solve complex fulfillment problems”. Coronavirus expected to cut industrial robot revenue by more than 8 per cent this year

June 11, 2020 by Sam Francis

By Maya Xiao of Interact Analysis

The coronavirus pandemic which has devastated economies worldwide is expected to reduce revenues in the industrial robot market by more than 8 per cent, according to a study by Interact Analysis.

“After a weak 2019, we originally expected the 2020 robot market to recover strongly, but Covid-19 changed the market revenue growth forecast from 4.8 percent to -3.6 percent,” writes Maya Xiao, automation market expert at Interact Analysis.

Global industrial robot shipments experienced negative growth for four consecutive quarters from mid-2018, she says. At the end of 2019, recovery signs appeared, and the mid-term growth rate turned positive. This turnaround happened in the context of a continued slowdown in general global manufacturing activity, which led to weak spending on machinery and automation equipment. Top 10 robotic video camera systems: Shenyang supplies robotic camera operator to Chinese TV station

June 10, 2020 by Mai Tao

Shenyang Xinsong Robot Automation has built and supplied a robotic camera operator to a Chinese television station.

The robotic system, which appears to integrate a mobile robot with an industrial robotic arm, was used to film a stage performance in Shenyang Radio and TV Station studios.

Both the robotic arm and the mobile robot seem to have been supplied by Siasun, also known as Shenyang Xinsong Robot Automation, one of the leading industrial robot makers in China. Present times require clever solutions, digitalisation, and process automation: How Y Soft has implemented robots in its offices

June 8, 2020 by David Edwards

By Ondřej Krajíček, chief technology strategist at Y Soft

Since the world was turned on its head as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, organisations in all sectors have been forced to transform the way they work, speed up their digital transformation projects and rapidly innovate their processes in a way they’ve never had to previously.

So far, we’ve seen organisations completely repurposing their offering to help in the fight against coronavirus, such as manufacturers producing PPE; we’ve seen staff rapidly reskilled, or even being offered from one industry to another; and we’ve seen organisations using technologies to create innovations in both software and hardware.

At Y Soft, we’ve been using our fleet of 3D Printers to contribute face shields to hospitals around the world, but we’ve also been implementing various innovations internally, to ensure our operations continue seamlessly while we’re not physically in the office. ASTI Mobile Robotics and BOOS Technical Lighting develop a mobile robot to fight coronavirus

June 5, 2020 by David Edwards

ASTI Mobile Robotics and BOOS Technical Lighting have developed a mobile disinfection robot against coronavirus which uses the ultraviolet light to eliminate germs and pathogens in the air as well as on surfaces and objects.

The radiation emitted by the robot, which can move around the facilities to be disinfected, achieves a reduction in the viral and bacterial load of up to 99.99 percent, says the company.

ASTI says the exclusive design of the lamp, in terms of power, intensity and size combined with the continuous movement of the vehicle, favours proximity to the critical areas to be disinfected, as well as minimising shadow spaces and maximising disinfection on horizontal and vertical planes “in record time”. Waypoint launches Kingpin lift and hitch top module for its warehouse robots

June 5, 2020 by David Edwards

Waypoint Robotics has launched a top module that enables the company’s omnidirectional warehouse robots to automatically load and unload payloads and connect to a variety of carts for material movement.

The module is called “Kingpin” and Waypoint says it enables its Vector robot – a 600 lb payload capacity AMR – to do two critical jobs with one simple top module, as opposed to having a dedicated fleet of lift deck robots for automatic load/unload, and another dedicated fleet of cart connecting robots for cart transport.

With Kingpin, Vector can automatically pick up a tote on one side of the factory, deliver it to the other side of the factory, and then connect to a cart on the way back to the starting point. [Read more…] about Waypoint launches Kingpin lift and hitch top module for its warehouse robots

Micron launches robot design challenge

June 4, 2020 by David Edwards

Micron Technology, a provider of memory and storage solutions, has launched its UV Robot Design Challenge.

The company says the competition is designed to address the growing need for reliable, low-cost ultraviolet light robotic solutions that can help automate disinfection and potentially combat the spread of Covid-19 and other diseases.

UV germicidal irradiation has been shown to destroy the RNA in viruses and can help mitigate the transmission of microbes, which can remain active on surfaces for prolonged periods of time. [Read more…] about Micron launches robot design challenge

Kuka milling robot used to manufacture film props

June 3, 2020 by David Edwards

Whether it is in series like Stranger Things or in blockbusters like Men in Black: International, filmmakers continuously need creative and high quality props.

To make these, a company called Robocarv, from the UK, is now using automation made in Germany – and have a Kuka milling robot manufacture the props.

The Kuka robot mills the props from blocks of plastic. (See video below.) [Read more…] about Kuka milling robot used to manufacture film props

Enquiries for Savioke’s delivery robot double amid pandemic

June 3, 2020 by David Edwards

The number of enquiries for Savioke’s delivery robot (see video below) has doubled amid the global coronavirus pandemic, according to an executive at the startup company.

Governments in virtually every country in the world have ordered lockdowns of citizens, or “shelter-in-place” orders, as they are referred to in the US.

The orders have led to many people in the robotics industry to predict that the demand for delivery robots, such as the ones produced by Savioke, will increase. [Read more…] about Enquiries for Savioke’s delivery robot double amid pandemic

Estonian supermarket chain Selver installs automated store technology

June 3, 2020 by David Edwards

Selver, an Estonian supermarket chain, has introduced fully automated store or locker technology at one of its 50 or more locations.

The store was developed, manufactured and supplied by Cleveron, a technology company which produces a range of automated item-dispensing systems, often using the word “robot” to describe them.

The Cleveron 501 is a stationary automated store that enables customers to receive online-ordered groceries without human contact. The first robotic grocery locker is situated on the outskirts of Tallinn, in front of Peetri Selver.
