Machine learning unlocks ‘superior performance’ in light-driven organic crystals

April 17, 2025 by Mark Allinson

Researchers at Waseda, University, Japan have developed a machine learning workflow to optimize the output force of photo-actuated organic crystals.

Using LASSO (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) regression to identify key molecular substructures and Bayesian optimization for efficient sampling, they achieved a maximum blocking force of 37.0 mN – 73 times more efficient than conventional methods.

These findings could help develop remote-controlled actuators for medical devices and robotics, supporting applications such as minimally invasive surgery and precision drug delivery. [Read more…] about Machine learning unlocks ‘superior performance’ in light-driven organic crystals

Dürr unveils new painting technology for vehicles

December 4, 2024 by Mark Allinson

Industrial robotics company Dürr has unveiled new painting technology for vehicles.

Dürr’s latest development enables mixed 2-component paint systems to be fed directly in the return system within the atomiser for the first time.

This eliminates volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions in the paint booth during flushing processes and colour changes. The new solution has been successfully deployed in two top coat lines for over a year.

Organic wholesaler ‘doubles output’ with AutoStore and Swisslog warehouse automation

March 10, 2021 by David Edwards

A top wholesaler in the Swiss organic market, Bio Partner, has “doubled its output” following the implementation of innovative robotic logistics from Swisslog at its facility in Aargau, Switzerland, according to the company.

Bio Partner supplies business customers in the organic specialist trade as well as the rest of the retail and food industry from its location in Seon, in Switzerland.

As a result of the merger with Somona, the warehouse reached its performance and capacity limits, and the wholesaler turned to a local partner with a global footprint to deliver an automated storage system. Michigan university scientists’ new solar panels could eventually lead to self-powering skyscrapers

August 20, 2020 by David Edwards

Imagine if all the glass we see on the sides of skyscrapers and other buildings were actually solar cells in disguise, collecting energy from the sun and helping to power the building and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

That is the dream of many scientists who are working on the technology. Essentially, they want to replace the silicon material that glass is made out of with material that is more suitable for capturing solar energy.

While green energy has made great strides in recent years – with Germans as a nation recently using more electricity from alternative sources than traditional gas- and oil-based power – there’s still a long way to go.
