Safety Beyond the Pavement: Lighting and Traction for Dangerous Terrains

June 1, 2026 by Sam Francis

The track looked fine at midday. By 5 pm, the light had dropped behind the ridge, the surface had changed from packed dirt to loose shale, and the headlights were showing maybe thirty meters of trail ahead, not enough to react to what came next. Nobody plans for that moment. Most builds aren’t ready for it either. [Read more…] about Safety Beyond the Pavement: Lighting and Traction for Dangerous Terrains

Piaggio Fast Forward launches Grogu-inspired cargo robot with autonomous following technology

May 14, 2026 by David Edwards

Piaggio Fast Forward has launched a new Star Wars-inspired version of its cargo-carrying robot, combining autonomous following technology with the distinctive design of Grogu’s floating pram from the Star Wars universe.

The new Grogu gitamini robot, developed in collaboration with Disney and Disney Consumer Products, is based on the company’s existing gitamini personal cargo robot platform but redesigned to resemble the transport pod used by the popular Star Wars character.

The launch comes as interest builds around the upcoming film Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu, with the robot forming part of Disney’s broader “Star Wars Most Wanted” merchandise campaign for 2026. Why Wire-Free Robotic Lawn Mowers Are Becoming the Industry Standard?

May 11, 2026 by David Edwards

The robotic lawn mower industry is entering a new phase of technological maturity. Over the past decade, systems relying on boundary wires have dominated the mainstream market due to their stability and reliability.

However, as user demand for “zero-maintenance” and “plug-and-play” experiences continues to grow, boundary-free robotic lawn mowers are rapidly becoming the industry’s future direction.

This shift represents not only a product upgrade but also a transformation of the industry from “rule-based automation” to “spatially intelligent autonomous systems”. [Read more…] about Why Wire-Free Robotic Lawn Mowers Are Becoming the Industry Standard?

BitRobot Foundation launches $5 million competition to ‘spark robotics breakthroughs’

September 29, 2025 by David Edwards

Global prize program challenges researchers to create embodied AI models to outperform human experts in various ‘moonshot’ outcomes

The BitRobot Foundation, an open robotics research and development lab, has launched its $5 million BitRobot Grand Challenges Fund, a global prize competition designed to accelerate breakthroughs in robotics and embodied AI.

Inspired by DARPA’s Grand Challenge that spurred advancement in self-driving technology, the program pits autonomous robotics AIs against human experts in high-stakes physical tasks.

Each category carries up to a $1 million grand prize for the first AI model to decisively outperform human benchmarks – offering clear evidence that the technology has reached full autonomy for that task. OpenMind launches first open-source operating system for intelligent robots

September 17, 2025 by Sam Francis

OpenMind has released the beta version of what it says is “the world’s first open-source operating system for intelligent robots”, adding that it’s “a universal platform that allows any robot to perceive, reason, and act in the real world”.

Robotics has long been fragmented, with developers forced to choose between closed ecosystems, hardware-specific software, or steep learning curves.

This allows any developer to install fully autonomous software on their robots. [Read more…] about OpenMind launches first open-source operating system for intelligent robots

NEC develops AI robot control technology for safe navigation in obstacle-rich environments

August 28, 2025 by Mai Tao

NEC has developed technology that utilizes AI to enable safe, efficient autonomous control of robot movement even in complex environments with many obstacles.

NEC’s in-house demonstrations of this technology have confirmed that a robot’s travel time can be reduced by “up to 50 percent when compared to conventional methods”.

This new technology utilizes NEC’s proprietary AI, which has been trained with the knowledge of multiple AIs, to generate optimal travel paths in real time. NEC aims to commercialize this technology by the end of fiscal 2026. [Read more…] about NEC develops AI robot control technology for safe navigation in obstacle-rich environments
