Global Ocean Robotics Day highlights advances in autonomous underwater robots

While the ocean’s depths may be vast, the growing community of researchers dedicated to exploring them with autonomous robotics is more connected than ever following Global Ocean Robotics Day.

Constructor University was one of 10 partner hubs around the world to host the inaugural international symposium on October 21, which explored how artificial intelligence and autonomous robotics are transforming ocean research and exploration.

The hybrid event was free to attend online or at one of 10 globally distributed, in-person hubs, and featured talks from leading researchers and academics from more than a dozen countries across Europe, Asia, North America and Australia. Scan Computers partners with OLO Robotics to make advanced robots easier to implement

Scan Computers has entered into a partnership with Sheffield-based OLO Robotics, combining Scan’s robotics hardware, AI infrastructure and technical expertise with OLO’s browser-based platform and specialist robotics engineering, to make advanced robotics easier to access and deploy.

OLO’s platform brings teleoperation, simulation and autonomous navigation together in the browser. With it, you can quickly and easily test robots in a safe virtual environment, monitoring their sensors and developing code that determines their behaviour, before deploying them in the real world.

A construction site is one of the worst places to rely on GPS. Concrete floors stack overhead, steel frames scatter the signal, and basements block it outright.

Yet this is exactly the environment where autonomous robots are increasingly expected to work precisely and navigate around moving crews, doing it without a satellite fix to tell them where they are.

The technology filling that gap is Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM). Rather than relying on a pre-loaded map or an external positioning signal, a SLAM-equipped robot builds its own map in real time using cameras or Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), often combined with inertial measurements for extra stability between readings. Brain Corp reports 68 percent growth and surpasses 50,000 autonomous robots worldwide

Brain Corp, a provider of operating systems for robots, has announced “strong global fleet momentum for the first half of 2026”.

This milestone underscores the growing role of autonomous robots as daily operational infrastructure across retail, logistics, airports, commercial cleaning, and inventory management.

In H1 2026, BrainOS-powered robots recorded 68 percent year-over-year growth in global deployments. Over the same period, the fleet logged more than 5.3 million autonomous operating hours, up 24 percent year over year, and autonomous coverage increased by 400 million square feet compared to the same period last year. Researchers unveil open-source robotic guide dog designed to assist blind and visually impaired people

Researchers have introduced what they describe as the world’s first fully autonomous robotic guide dog, an AI-powered mobile robot designed to help blind and visually impaired people navigate both indoor and outdoor environments.

Named Milo, the robot has been developed as a lower-cost alternative to traditional guide dogs, which require extensive training and are often in short supply.

Strider Robotics demonstrates 40 kg payload quadruped robot as commercial pilots begin

Indian robotics startup Strider Robotics says it has successfully demonstrated what it describes as one of the country’s highest-payload quadruped robots, capable of carrying a 40 kg payload while maintaining stability across challenging terrain.

The Bengaluru-based company is now moving from prototype development to commercial deployment, with field pilots under way with a major oil and gas company and an automotive manufacturer.

Strider Robotics develops autonomous quadruped robots alongside an AI-powered software platform for industrial inspection, navigation, mission planning, asset monitoring and analytics. Piaggio Fast Forward has launched a new Star Wars-inspired version of its cargo-carrying robot, combining autonomous following technology with the distinctive design of Grogu’s floating pram from the Star Wars universe.

The new Grogu gitamini robot, developed in collaboration with Disney and Disney Consumer Products, is based on the company’s existing gitamini personal cargo robot platform but redesigned to resemble the transport pod used by the popular Star Wars character.

ZF Marine and Avikus partner to advance autonomous marine control systems
