Multi-robot demo showcases new UK’s Plymouth subsea test range

July 10, 2026 by Sam Francis

A new underwater trials site designed to accelerate UK marine autonomy and ocean sensing has completed its first major test thanks to a live, multi-marine surface and subsea robotic platform demonstration.

The Smart Sound Connect Subsurface (SSCS) project, part of Smart Sound Plymouth, led by the University of Plymouth, with Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), saw platforms from ACUA Ocean, ecoSUB Robotics, Seaber and Sonardyne working together above and below the surface.

The all-day collaborative demonstration enabled visitors from business, science, defence and national bodies to view the potential of the three-year, £1.2 million SSCS project. [Read more…] about Multi-robot demo showcases new UK’s Plymouth subsea test range

University of Rhode Island opens advanced Ocean Robotics Laboratory for autonomous marine research

July 6, 2026 by Sam Francis

Event marked milestone for Narragansett Bay Campus

The University of Rhode Island celebrated a major milestone in the $300 million, multi-phase revitalization of the Narragansett Bay Campus with an underwater ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Ocean Robotics Laboratory on June 25.

Students Elliot Roman and Jake Bonney piloted URI’s remotely operated vehicle Rhody to cut the ceremonial ribbon underwater in the building’s 20-foot-wide by 30-foot-long test tank.

Governor Dan McKee, House Speaker Emeritus K. Joseph Shekarchi, other local and state elected leaders, members of the URI Board of Trustees, and University faculty, staff, students, and alumni were among the hundreds who attended the ceremony. Greenpeace robot stages deepest-ever seabed protest

May 27, 2026 by Sam Francis

While conducting a scientific survey of vulnerable and unexplored deep-sea ecosystems along the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge, environmental campaign group Greenpeace deployed an underwater robot from 2,300 meters below the surface, in the deepest banner protest ever made from the seabed.

The words demanding global leaders do something were: “LISTEN TO THE SCIENCE!”

Dr Sandra Schöttner, chief scientist for the Deep Arctic Expedition, Greenpeace International, said: “This marks the deepest banner protest in history, to speak for ecosystems that have no voice of their own. [Read more…] about Greenpeace robot stages deepest-ever seabed protest

Oil and gas robotics deployment expands as global market heads toward $205 billion in 2030, says GlobalData

February 6, 2026 by Sam Francis

Robotics is rapidly transforming oil and gas operations as advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing unlock the next phase of industrial automation. AI enables advanced decision-making, navigation in complex environments, and reduced reliance on human intervention.

Against this backdrop, the global robotics market is projected to grow from $90.2 billion in 2024 to $205.5 billion in 2030, forecasts GlobalData, an intelligence and productivity platform.

GlobalData’s Strategic Intelligence report, Robotics in Oil and Gas, highlights how robotics is increasingly being adopted across the oil and gas value chain to improve safety, efficiency, and asset integrity. Underwater robots take to the deep to map unexplored oceans

June 20, 2025 by Sam Francis

Autonomous underwater robots from the University of Sydney supported an Australian Museum scientific expedition mapping unexplored reefs around Norfolk Island.

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) from the University of Sydney has taken a deep dive in the oceans surrounding Norfolk Island on an scientific expedition to document previously unexplored reefs.

The robots collected high-resolution seafloor images which will then be used to create three-dimensional underwater models of these unique reef ecosystems and marine habitats. [Read more…] about Underwater robots take to the deep to map unexplored oceans
