Virginia Tech researchers control soft robotics with ‘AI’s cousin’: ‘Reservoir computing’

May 27, 2026 by Sam Francis

Soft robotics – machines made of flexible, muscle-like materials – can bend and stretch in fluid ways that put the rigid robots of old sci-fi movies to shame.

But the flexibility that lets them pick ripe tomatoes or navigate a search-and-rescue site comes at a cost: soft robotics are notoriously difficult to control.

Virginia Tech researchers are working to solve that problem using a new computing approach inspired by the complex architecture of neurons in the brain. [Read more…] about Virginia Tech researchers control soft robotics with ‘AI’s cousin’: ‘Reservoir computing’

Redwire delivers lunar robotic arm prototype to European Space Agency

May 26, 2026 by Sam Francis

Redwire has delivered a prototype lunar robotic manipulator to the European Space Agency as Europe continues developing its Argonaut lunar lander program for future Moon missions.

The robotic arm system, known as the Manipulator for Argonaut Payload Needs and Unloading Support (MANUS), was developed by Redwire in collaboration with Added Value Solutions and with support from ESA.

The project is being led by Redwire’s Luxembourg-based team, which recently completed several major milestones including preliminary design work and performance assessments. [Read more…] about Redwire delivers lunar robotic arm prototype to European Space Agency

GFT takes AI from visual inspection to physical action for auto manufacturers

May 18, 2026 by David Edwards

Global digital transformation company GFT Technologies has launched its new AI-powered robotic arms designed for automotive manufacturing.

Building on the company’s existing work with Google on AI-powered visual inspection, the new technology can not only detect defective parts but also physically remove them from the assembly line – helping manufacturers improve quality and keep production moving at full speed.

While many manufacturers have adopted AI for visual inspection, most systems stop at detection. Software can flag anomalies, but human intervention is still required to act on them, creating delays and increasing the risk of defective parts moving further down the line. Dürr launches new robots with optimized arm geometry for painting tasks

May 13, 2026 by David Edwards

With the EcoRP4, Dürr is introducing a new generation of robots used to paint car bodies. The compact painting robot features an asymmetric architecture that improves access to the body for the applicator, enabling it to reliably reach even hard-to-access interior areas.

Its reduced number of components also lowers maintenance requirements and operational costs, especially benefiting car manufacturers with high production volumes.

Since 1998, Dürr has shipped almost 20,000 painting robots from the Ecopaint robotic family worldwide. The latest addition to the family, the EcoRP4, has been developed as the successor to the six-axis EcoRP E/L x33iC robot, and is specifically designed for painting lines that handle high volumes and standardised applications. RE2 Robotics expands campus with acquisition of new building

September 22, 2020 by Elaine

RE2 Robotics, a developer of mobile robots, has expanded its Lawrenceville campus with the acquisition of a new facility. The new space will help the company to meet the growing demand for its robotic systems in both the defense and commercial markets.

Located at 4920 Harrison Ave, and directly across the street from its current office, the new facility will allow RE2 to increase its in-house manufacturing capabilities. The space, which measures approximately 10,000 square feet, features a large tank for testing RE2’s underwater manipulation systems, as well as both indoor and outdoor testing areas that will allow engineers to conduct on-site testing of the company’s robotic systems.

Once renovations are complete, the company’s machine shop, electrical, and assembly labs, as well as the entire production team, will relocate to the new building. [Read more…] about RE2 Robotics expands campus with acquisition of new building
