Industry group developing standards for exoskeletons

ASTM International, formerly known as American Society for Testing and Materials, is developing global standards for exoskeletons.

The group’s proposed “Exoskeletons Guide” aims to provide tools that help assess and ultimately improve the usefulness and usability of exoskeletons and exosuits.

Kevin Purcell, an ergonomist at the US Army Public Health Center’s Aberdeen Proving Ground, says: “Exoskeletons and exosuits can open up a world of possibilities, from helping workers perform industrial tasks while not getting overstressed, to helping stroke victims learning to walk again, to helping soldiers carry heavier rucksacks longer distances. Brain Corp expands global presence with opening of European headquarters

Located in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Brain Corp Europe will serve as a hub for operations, software development, and continuing research and development activities.

HP opens 3D printing and digital manufacturing centre of excellence in Spain

HP has opened a new 3D printing and digital manufacturing centre of excellence in Barcelona, Spain – one of the world’s largest and most advanced research and development facilities for those technologies.

The new centre brings together hundreds of the world’s leading additive manufacturing experts in more than 150,000 square feet of space.

The 3+ acre facility at HP’s Barcelona campus is dedicated to the development of HP’s industrial 3D printing portfolio and provides a large-scale factory environment to collaborate with customers and partners on digital manufacturing technologies.

OnRobot installs Evoko Liso system to manage meeting rooms in its headquarters

OnRobot, a manufacturer of end-of-arm tools for robots, has installed an Evoko Liso system to manage the meeting rooms in its headquarters.

Evoko, a Swedish manufacturer of meeting room management solutions, says its “sleek, centralised booking system” was chosen for its “smart design and ease-of-use that helps further enhance the modern look and feel of the OnRobot premises”.

Isorg and Sumitomo Chemical partner to develop organic photodetectors

Isorg, a developer of organic photodetectors and large-area image sensors, and Sumitomo Chemical, a provider of OPD materials production and other fields, have agreed a partnership to develop new OPD products for use as smartphone fingerprint sensors and hybrid organic CMOS image sensors.

This agreement expands the existing collaboration between Sumitomo Chemical and Isorg that began in 2013.

Isorg will license its technology processes to its OEMs, while Sumitomo Chemical will manufacture the dedicated organic semiconductor material, as well as support Isorg in terms of production technology and marketing. The high throughput solution for infectious disease diagnostics sets a new standard in automation for molecular testing in core laboratories and other large centralized laboratories.

Nikon has invested $7.5 million in Wrnch – or wrnch, as the company prefers – a computer vision and deep learning startup.

Established in 2014, wrnch uses deep learning to develop and provide tools and software development kits (SDKs) that enable computers to see and understand human movement and activity.

Wrnch has also used its advanced work in pose estimation technologies to establish ties with major entertainment and communications companies. ABB launches Optimold Control for in-mold casting

The recently launched ABB Ability Optimold Control system corrects metal casting problems in the mold and ensures that casting takes place under optimal conditions.

It works in real-time, using feedback from a high-resolution sensor system (such as ABB Ability Optimold Monitor) to actively control electromagnetic devices such as stirrers or brakes which can influence fluid flow.

Combining with ABB’s existing product suite for steel manufacturers, the controller is claimed to give instant and optimal process control in the mold, resulting in higher product quality, improved productivity and enhanced efficiency in the slab casting process while helping avoid quality downgrades.

Cobalt Robotics raises $35 million Series B funding with Coatue
