Kirisense wins funding to develop robotic fingertips that can sense touch and slip

UK robotics startup Kirisense has secured funding from the Henry Royce Institute to develop advanced tactile sensing technology designed to give robots a more human-like sense of touch.

The project, supported through the Henry Royce Institute’s Industrial Collaboration Programme and delivered in partnership with the University of Sheffield, will focus on creating robotic fingertips capable of detecting shear forces and slip in real time.

The funding comes as the robotics industry increasingly turns its attention from perception to manipulation. While advances in artificial intelligence and machine vision have significantly improved what robots can see and understand, handling objects reliably remains one of the sector’s biggest challenges. Robotiq launches tactile sensor fingertips for adaptive gripper

Robotiq has launched its TSF-85 tactile sensor fingertips for the 2F-85 Adaptive Gripper, giving Physical AI systems the sense of touch needed for real-world manipulation.

With integrated tactile sensing, Robotiq enables robots to not only see the world, but to feel, understand, and reliably interact with it at scale. The Tactile Sensor Fingertips for the 2F-85 gripper are available now.

XELA Robotics unlocks enhanced automation for humanoid and industrial robots

XELA Robotics presented its uSkin 3D tactile sensing technology at CES 2026, showing how advanced touch sensing can improve manipulation and automation in humanoid and industrial robots.

The Tokyo-based company, which focuses on tactile sensor hardware and software, demonstrated uSkin integrated into robotic hands and grippers, highlighting how robots can detect contact forces, object shape, and movement within a grasp.

XELA Robotics adds high-precision tactile sensing to Tesollo robot hand

XELA Robotics, a specialist in advanced 3D tactile sensor technology, says it has “successfully integrated” its uSkin sensors into a Tesollo DG-5F five-fingered anthropomorphic robot hand – a popular model capable of human-level gripping and manipulation.

Commercial orders will be accepted beginning in the late first quarter of 2026.

In addition, XELA Robotics’ 2026 technology roadmap includes making its sensors smaller, faster and smarter. An example of this will be the reduction in size of its sensing points from about 4 mm x 4 mm to 2.5 mm x 2.5 mm allowing the addition of more sensing points than previously possible. Humanoid robots forecast to see ‘14-fold market expansion in five years’

The global market for humanoid robots, widely categorized as “embodied AI”, is projected to grow rapidly over the next 10 years – and is expected to see a ‘14-fold market expansion in five years’ , according to IDTechEx. 

This surge is fueled by major players like Tesla and BYD, who plan to expand humanoid deployment in their factories more than tenfold between 2025 and 2026, aiming for over 25 percent cost reduction per humanoid robot.

With 2025 seen as the industry’s take-off year, IDTechEx anticipates the market for humanoid robot sensory components, including LiDAR, encoders, torque sensors, 6-axis sensors, IMUs, MEMS sensors, and cameras, to reach approximately $10 billion within 10 years.
