University of Waterloo-led researchers develop ‘artificial muscles’ for robots

October 30, 2025 by Sam Francis

An international team led by researchers at the University of Waterloo has developed material that can be flexible “artificial muscles” to replace rigid motors and pumps in robots and allow them to move more naturally and fluidly.

Soft robots differ from hard robots in that they are pliable and flexible, making them safe for interaction with people, but the materials currently used for components enabling their movement aren’t strong enough to be effective.

The Waterloo-led research group found a way to dramatically strengthen smart, rubber-like materials by mixing liquid crystals (LCs) – commonly found in displays for electronics and sensors – into promising building blocks for soft robots known as liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). The Science of Clean Indoor Air: How Everyday Habits Impact Your Home’s Air Quality

October 30, 2025 by Sam Francis

Here’s a startling fact: the air inside your home can be up to five times more polluted than the air outside. Yet most of us spend roughly 90% of our time indoors, breathing whatever quality of air our homes provide.

Indoor air quality isn’t just about comfort – it’s a health issue that touches everything from how well you sleep to how easily you breathe. While many homeowners focus on obvious culprits like smoking or chemical cleaners, they often miss how their daily cleaning habits can make or break their indoor air.

One of the most powerful weapons in this fight against indoor pollution is a quality vacuum, which can dramatically transform your home’s air when used correctly. [Read more…] about The Science of Clean Indoor Air: How Everyday Habits Impact Your Home’s Air Quality

Nvidia partners with Uber to ‘make the world ready for robotaxis’

October 29, 2025 by Sam Francis

Nvidia is partnering with Uber to “scale the world’s largest level 4-ready mobility network”, using the company’s next-generation robotaxi and autonomous delivery fleets, the new Nvidia DRIVE AGX Hyperion 10 autonomous vehicle (AV) development platform and Nvidia DRIVE AV software purpose-built for L4 autonomy.

By enabling faster growth across the level 4 ecosystem, Nvidia can support Uber in scaling its global autonomous fleet to 100,000 vehicles over time, starting in 2027. These vehicles will be developed in collaboration with Nvidia and other Uber ecosystem partners, using Nvidia DRIVE. Grubhub expands partnership with Avride to bring autonomous delivery robots to its marketplace

October 27, 2025 by Sam Francis

Grubhub is expanding its partnership with Avride to launch a robot delivery pilot for customers ordering from Wonder’s Jersey City location.

The initiative marks the first time Grubhub has offered autonomous delivery in its marketplace outside of college campuses – and the first time Wonder is bringing robot delivery to its customers.

During the pilot, customers can place orders from Wonder’s Jersey City location through the Grubhub platform as usual. If an eligible delivery address is within a set range of the restaurant, they will have the option to choose delivery via an Avride robot. AgiBot World Challenge brings embodied intelligence to life at IROS 2025

October 27, 2025 by Sam Francis

As humanoid robots dominate the headlines at this year’s International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2025), the AgiBot World Challenge directed the spotlight at embodied intelligence – testing how well robots can bridge the gap between digital simulation and real-world performance.

The official competition of IROS 2025 has attracted 431 robotics teams from 23 countries, all pushing the limits of autonomy, dexterity, and real-time perception. After three months of global online trials, the top 12 teams are now heading to Hangzhou for the offline finals.

During the finals, robots will be challenged to perform a series of complex real-world tasks – including folding a T-shirt, picking items from a moving conveyor belt, and preparing food using a microwave – all fully autonomously. Researchers develop robots to work together to explore the Moon and Mars

October 24, 2025 by Sam Francis

University of Pennsylvania engineers, NASA, and five other universities tested robotic systems designed to help unmanned explorers cooperate in the dunes of White Sands, New Mexico, paving the way for Moon and Mars exploration

In early August, the crisp dawn sky above White Sands National Park glows faintly blue, gradually brightening as streaks of marigold and soft pink pierce the clouds with the rising sun.

But although the powder-white sand of the 30-foot gypsum dunes is cool at dawn, air temperatures become blistering hot as the sun approaches its zenith.

It’s precisely these harsh conditions that drew an interdisciplinary research team to this remote desert, using it as an Earthly stand-in for the Moon and Mars. Their goal: to evaluate lunar robots designed to traverse unforgiving terrain. [Read more…] about Researchers develop robots to work together to explore the Moon and Mars

Agentic science and the rise of the self-driving lab at Virginia Tech

October 24, 2025 by Sam Francis

Agentic science. A quick glance at the term and you might think of something very complex, but the end goal is to use artificial intelligence (AI) “agents” to advance scientific research with ease. And while these agents aren’t top secret, they are highly skilled and trained.

Hongliang Xin, Virginia Tech chemical engineering professor, along with collaborators John Kitchin from Carnegie Mellon University and Heather Kulik from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, published a commentary in Nature Machine Intelligence exploring the foundation and frontiers of agentic science, outlining its emerging uses, limitations, and pathways for responsible integration into scientific practice.

In a recent conversation, Xin, Kitchin, and Kulik discussed the emerging paradigm of “agentic science” and what it means for the future of research. [Read more…] about Agentic science and the rise of the self-driving lab at Virginia Tech
