How deep learning enables autonomous vehicles to understand their environment

August 16, 2018 by David Edwards

nvidia drive ai

Humans are constantly taking in data from the world around them using five primary senses. You hear your phone ring, see a notification on your computer screen or touch something hot.

However, without perception, there’s no way to decipher those inputs and determine what’s relevant. That you should answer the call, know there’s an email to respond to or pull away your hand before it’s burned.

Now imagine driving on a highway, where a constant stream of information surrounds you. From lane markings and street signs to lane-splitting motorcyclists, merging trucks and traffic jams – the ability to make instant, informed decisions is not just a skill, it’s an imperative.  [Read more…] about How deep learning enables autonomous vehicles to understand their environment

Boeing has invested an undisclosed sum in Digital Alloys, a Burlington, Massachusetts-based company developing high-speed, multi-metal additive manufacturing systems that produce 3D-printed parts for aerospace and other production applications.

Digital Alloys’ Joule Printing technology is said to be able to “rapidly combine multiple metals into each part, which enhances thermal, electrical, magnetic and mechanical properties”.

The process allows metals like titanium and high-temperature alloys to be 3D-printed for parts that could be used on Boeing products.  [Read more…] about Boeing invests in high-speed metal 3D printing company Digital Alloys

Bosch reveals ideas for autonomous technology for trucks

August 14, 2018 by David Edwards

bosch truck illustration

Bosch has unveiled a long list of ideas for future trucks, which it envisions as having much more autonomous technology and being powered by an electric engine.

Apparently, the company also believes digital side-view mirrors are the way forward, as well as a “digital instrument cluster”, which is probably the same as a “virtual dashboard”.

In fact, “digital” is at the heart of almost all the new ideas, with computers being used for cloud connectivity, predictive diagnostics and many other new functions and services.  [Read more…] about Bosch reveals ideas for autonomous technology for trucks
