Switzerland’s largest trade fair celebrates its 20th anniversary with a promising edition

May 22, 2022 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

In September 2021, EPHJ was the first show to reopen in Switzerland after the health crisis. A daring risk welcomed by the high-precision players who attended and by the visitors whose quality and qualification were recognised by 98 percent of the exhibitors according to the satisfaction survey conducted at the end of this 2021 edition.

Only 8 months after the last edition, the 20th edition of the EPHJ is once again promising. The number of exhibiting companies has risen by 26 percent compared to September 2021 to reach 700 exhibitors to date.

The easing of international travel is confirmed with 15 countries represented among the exhibitors, including the United States, and a trend towards the first returns of foreign visitors is expected. June 12, 2020 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

Swiss Productions says it has gained a competitive advantage by implementing two Productive Robotics OB7 collaborative robots on their CNC mills to eliminate idle spindle time and maximize production. (See video below.)

From a family owned company that started in a 750 square foot facility and five screw machines, Swiss Productions has grown to what it is today – a high quality, precision, and reliable screw machine shop producing over 2 million parts per month to customers worldwide in the medical, electronics, aerospace, and government industries.

Located in Ventura, California, Swiss Productions today has over 50 screw machines and 30 secondary machines and produces components ranging in size from 2.5 inches in diameter down to syringe tips measuring .019 inches in diameter. Understanding Swiss-Type Machining

February 3, 2020 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

The CNC market is undergoing tremendous growth. One estimate shows that it will be worth $129 billion by the end of 2026.

A number of factors are contributing to the strong growth this industry is experiencing, but one of the biggest factors is the proliferation of new types of machining.

There is an entire segment of the industry known as Swiss type machining. This is a growing field that has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. [Read more…] about Understanding Swiss-Type Machining

FemtoPrint wins the 2019 Exhibitors’ Grand Prix at EPHJ

June 24, 2019 by Abdul Montaqim

FemtoPrint, a Swiss company specialising in microtechnology, has won the 2019 Exhibitors’ Grand Prix at the EPHJ event.

The young Ticino company impressed the judges with its “SPOT-RVC”, which has been described as a “real innovation in the medical technology market and a beacon of hope for the 16 million people worldwide with retinal vein occlusion”.

The Safe Puncture Optimized Tool (SPOT), designed by FemtoPrint, aims to safely inject a drug that dissolves clots in the retinal veins without harming tissue, thanks to a new high-precision miniaturised medical tool. [Read more…] about FemtoPrint wins the 2019 Exhibitors’ Grand Prix at EPHJ

ETH Zürich, a university in Switzerland, has unveiled a plan to build a three-storey house – dubbed DFab House – using robots and 3D printing. (See video below.)

Structural engineers and sustainability experts from ETH Zürich have teamed up with business partners on the project, which is designed to bring numerous building technologies from research labs into the real world.

The project is overseen by the National Centre of Competence in Research Digital Fabrication, and its architects, robotics specialists, and materials scientists.  [Read more…] about Swiss robots planning to build houses using 3D printers

Got milk? How a Swiss company builds filling and packaging systems for milk, coffee and other products

June 18, 2017 by David Edwards

Scaled technology and functioning interfaces are essential for Swiss Can Machinery, which is why the company’s filling and packaging systems have a modular design throughout, and why it uses a product program with a scaled structure for the drive technology.

The filling and packaging systems at Swiss Can Machinery – which was established by brothers Marc and Michael Grabher – shows how this objective can be achieved.

The company turns to stainless steel motors for the actuators; for example, when these systems are used for filling and packaging pharmaceutical products.  [Read more…] about Got milk? How a Swiss company builds filling and packaging systems for milk, coffee and other products

Microtechnology exhibition to showcase innovations in watchmaking and medicine

It’s not one of the most famous exhibitions in the world, and not the biggest, but that’s probably appropriate for EPHJ, because it’s all about small things, or – more accurately – what’s called the “microtechnology” sector.

Microtechnology includes such things as watchmaking, jewellery making, and precision instrumentation for medicine, all of which are relatively large business sectors in Switzerland, where EPHJ is being held, on 20-23 June 2017 – Geneva, to be exact.

Now in its 16th year, the event is described as “an unmissable event for high-precision manufacturers, with exhibitors from the worlds of watchmaking and jewellery, microtechnology and medtech”.  [Read more…] about Microtechnology exhibition to showcase innovations in watchmaking and medicine

Watchmaking robots: It’s a small world

September 25, 2016 by Abdul Montaqim

When Apple wanted to launch a watch, most people may have thought the company would name it iWatch, to go with iPhone, iPad and iLife.

However, Swatch raised a legal objection on the grounds that it had the rights to a product called iSwatch, and Apple’s iWatch would be too similar. This week, the courts agreed and banned Apple from using the name.

But Apple had already changed its mind some time ago, and went with Apple Watch, which has gone on to sell 13 million units in its first year, estimated to be a faster sales rate than the iPhone.

But as a total, 13 million is barely a drop in the ocean of the global watch market.  [Read more…] about Watchmaking robots: It’s a small world
