Small potatoes: A closer look at chips

October 23, 2016 by David Edwards

One of the issues with analysing the chip market, as with some others, is that the products are complex and have a huge array of applications. This often makes it difficult to compare one chip with another.

Moreover, some people might not know the difference between a micro-processor and a micro-controller, or what a semiconductor is… and where microchips fit into all this.

So here’s an attempt at an explanation. [Read more…] about Small potatoes: A closer look at chips

Robotics and automation giant Denso says it’s become the lead investor in Thinci

Denso says its investment in startup will help accelerate next-generation automotive technology, using innovative deep learning and vision processing silicon and software.

The company adds that its investment will lead to advancements in driver assistance and autonomous driving, improve the efficiency of thermal systems, and optimize the productivity of the vehicle’s powertrain.

Tony Cannestra, Denso International America’s director of corporate ventures, says: “Denso has been researching new developments in the area of computer vision processing. We strongly believe that Thinci’s technology will soon become a key component of next generation autonomous driving systems that require advanced computing techniques combined with deep learning capabilities.  [Read more…] about Denso invests in deep learning and vision processing startup Thinci

By Thomas R. Cutler

The technology driving the most significant transformation of audits over the next three years is unquestionably Optical Character Recognition (OCR).

Too often the thought of automation has been relegated to the manufacturing plant floor or materials handling in a distribution center.

Yet as small businesses represent the largest segment of private lending (more than 90 per cent of the funds by third party lenders), the new form of automation, artificial intelligence and big data is fast-growing and significant.

There are now many viable options on the OCR market, including: PerfectAudit by Ocrolus, SodaPDF, Adobe Acrobat, ABBYY FineReader, and Readiris; pros and cons to each technology, yet only PerfectAudit is the only OCR application custom built for identifying aberrancies and trends during financial reviews, yet flexible enough to be utilized by anyone reviewing bank and credit card statements.

Many industries can add tremendous efficiency by translating paper documents to intelligent data.  [Read more…] about Optical character recognition drives: Automation of auditing for lean efficiencies and accuracy

As robots are fast becoming our co-workers, we take a look at when and where this alliance began. By James Hall, CEO of Genfour

The first autonomous robots joined the workforce at a General Motors plant in 1961, where they performed tasks like welding car bodies together.

In the decades that followed, robots performed an increasing share of industrial factory work, but always alone – their inventors, George Deyol and Joseph Engelberger, deemed them too dangerous to work around people.  [Read more…] about The growing power of robots in today’s economy and society

SS&C Technologies, a global provider of financial services software and software-enabled services, has automated agent notices processing within SS&C Bank Loan Services.

The company says the new agent notices process streamlines the labor intensive and opaque processes that currently exist in today’s workflows.

Replaced with a fully automated process, managers can provide transparency through an easy-to-access client portal to store and process documentation related to bank loan holdings.  [Read more…] about SS&C automates processes to manage its clients’ $1 trillion of assets
