AI is having a moment. One need only casually scan the news each week to see that the topics of artificial intelligence and machine learning have grown like ivy, extending their tendrils into stories as varied as racial bias, hiring, and of course, identifying spiders.

But for all the diverse applications of AI across our inboxes, magazines and evening news, few outside of the engineering community have a robust understanding of what the terms actually mean, or how the robots and algorithms we increasingly rely upon come to know how to do the complex jobs humans assign to them.

China overtakes US as world’s leading patent generator

China has overtaken the US as the world’s leading researcher, generating 58,990 patents in 2019 compared with America’s 57,840. 

This is the first time since 1978 that the US has lost its position as the world’s leading producer of patent-winning inventions or innovations. (See animation below.)

Trump looking to ban Alibaba

Alibaba, which at one time was the world’s largest e-commerce company, is in the sights of US President Donald Trump, according to Reuters.

Asked directly at a White House briefing if he was considering a ban on Alibaba, Trump replied: “We’re looking at other things, yes we are.”

Toyota boss calls for transformation as profit plunges 74 percent

The president of automotive giant Toyota has called for the transformation of company amid a 74 percent decrease in profit, mostly as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Toyota this week has reported a profit of approximately $1.5 billion for the most recent quarter, which is down from more than $6 billion in the same quarter the previous year.

Computer games giant Nintendo’s profits skyrocket by more than 500 per cent

Nintendo, one of the original games companies and still one of the biggest despite the “casual” gaming revolution brought about by smartphones, is reporting an astounding increase in profits. 

According to the Financial Times, Nintendo’s net profits “soared by 541 percent” at the height of the coronavirus pandemic and its consequential lockdowns, when most people in most countries stayed home.

Nintendo often suffers from too much demand for its consoles, as it did when its Switch handheld console – which looks rather like a smartphone, as shown in the main image – sold out around the world with many millions still searching for it.
