Rozum Café develops collaborative robotic system for coffee-making and serving

August 10, 2020 by David Edwards

Rozum Robotics has developed a collaborative robotic system for coffee-making and serving, calling it Rozum Café. (See video below.)

The labor shortage is a common challenge in manufacturing. Human-robot collaboration is a promising solution to this problem.

Production lines, where a human and a robot can work shoulder by shoulder, unite robotic efficiency and human creativity. [Read more…] about Rozum Café develops collaborative robotic system for coffee-making and serving

FedEx introduces robots to ‘most difficult’ job in sorting facility

August 10, 2020 by David Edwards

FedEx has installed industrial robotic arms to do what is considered the “most difficult” job to automate in a sorting facility in Memphis, USA.

As shown in the Wall Street Journal video below, FedEx has integrated Yaskawa robots and software from Plus One Robotics into a robotic system that performs a task which involves picking up parcels or envelopes from a tray and placing them on a conveyor.

While this is a simple job for a human, automating this step in a warehouse has proved very difficult in the past. [Read more…] about FedEx introduces robots to ‘most difficult’ job in sorting facility

Mighty Buildings aims to automate 80 percent of construction process

August 7, 2020 by David Edwards

Mighty Buildings, a startup providing automated solutions for modern home building, has launched out of stealth after graduating from Y Combinator in winter 2018 and raising a total of $30 million from Khosla Ventures, Y Combinator, SV Angel, CoreVC, and others.

The company says it uses a combination of 3D printing and prefabrication techniques to create a production-as-a-service platform that will “automate up to 80 percent of the building process”.

Mighty Buildings says it has a unique approach that is both project- and design-agnostic, and can create “everything from small complex components to panels to full-size volumetric modules”. [Read more…] about Mighty Buildings aims to automate 80 percent of construction process

China’s biggest chipmaker to double investment in capital goods to $7 billion

August 7, 2020 by Mai Tao

China’s largest chipmaker Semiconductor Manufacturing International is to double its investment in capital goods to $6.7 billion, according to a report on the Nikkei Asian Review website.

The company is somewhat flush with cash as a result of net profit skyrocketing by 644 percent in the second quarter. Part of the increase is due to Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei stockpiling chips.

Huawei is trying to prepare for any potential shortage in its supply chain caused by the ban imposed on its activities in the US and Europe. [Read more…] about China’s biggest chipmaker to double investment in capital goods to $7 billion

Precision and Convenience: How Robots Are Sustaining Maintenance Beyond Working Lines

August 4, 2020 by Polly

When we think of robotics and automation, the first sight that comes to our mind is that of an industrial production line, where giant robots carry out the high-precision task of assembling products, one step at a time without compromising on efficiency and accuracy.

But as the technology of robotics and automation is becoming much more sophisticated, the uses of robots are expanding from the factory floor to new territories.

One of these new domains is that of maintenance in every industry. Robotics have made concrete inroads in the maintenance department of every aspiring industry and this reach is not unwarranted. Facebook unveils robot that can walk high wires to install telecom and power lines

August 4, 2020 by Mark Allinson

Social media giant Facebook has unveiled a robot, designed by ULC Robotics, that can move along high wires to install telecom and power lines. (See video below.)

Facebook Connectivity, in collaboration with a number of partners, says it has spent the last few years developing the robot.

The company describes it as an aerial fiber deployment solution that uses a robot designed to install a specialized fiber-optic cable on medium-voltage power lines. [Read more…] about Facebook unveils robot that can walk high wires to install telecom and power lines

Japanese startups develop concept batteries that last ‘10 times longer’

August 3, 2020 by Mai Tao

Japanese startup companies are developing concept batteries that could last “10 times longer” than current technologies.

One company, 3Dom, has demonstrated numerous ideas for next-generation batteries, mostly based on conventional lithium-ion systems.

Most recently, the company has developed next generation rechargeable batteries that can be used in vessels. [Read more…] about Japanese startups develop concept batteries that last ‘10 times longer’

Opinion: A coronavirus-induced acceleration of robotics and automation is happening in China

July 30, 2020 by Mai Tao

By Gao Feng Advisory

A coronavirus-induced acceleration of robotics and automation appears to be taking place in China. There are a number of forces driving this catalysis in automation technologies.

Firstly, the Chinese government and its policies are playing a central role. This will be particularly reflected in the unprecedented spending on “new infrastructure” as a response to the pandemic.

Secondly, the technologies and related-industries targeted by the government’s new infrastructure agenda are critical components. [Read more…] about Opinion: A coronavirus-induced acceleration of robotics and automation is happening in China

Norgren helps VinFast to build Vietnam’s first mass-production stamping press

July 29, 2020 by Mai Tao

Automotive start-up VinFast has delivered Vietnam’s first mass-produced stamping parts in less than two years, in part thanks to tooling from Norgren, part of IMI, which is being used to produce the body panels on its flagship models.

To support VinFast’s Hai Phong site, which has the capacity to produce 250,000 cars per year, Norgren sites in China and USA collaborated to create the tooling, including saddles, sensors and tooling arms, which will be used to move panels through the VinFast manufacturing press process.

VinFast unveiled prototypes of its first two car models, a sedan and SUV, at the Paris Motor Show in October 2018, and Norgren was able to successfully deliver its tooling solution to VinFast earlier this year ahead of volume production.
