ExRobotics develops ‘new and improved’ version of its inspection robot

April 8, 2023 by Mark Allinson

ExRobotics has developed a “new and improved” version of its ATEX-certified inspection robot, together with the help of Shell Pernis and DOW Terneuzen.

ExRobotics says “many companies” have adopted this way of working, and as a result, there are now 30 of its robots operating worldwide on a daily basis.

Why do industrial companies send employees into potentially hazardous environments (ATEX Zone 1 environments) when robots could do some of the work? Several studies have shown that inspection of hazardous environments by robots is the solution to preventing human injury during inspection. Robots perform inspections more accurately, more productively and more cost-effectively than humans. [Read more…] about ExRobotics develops ‘new and improved’ version of its inspection robot

Nvidia expands availability of its robotics development software and hardware

April 4, 2023 by Mark Allinson

Nvidia says it is making its robotics software and hardware more widely available.

The chipmaker says its Omniverse Cloud will be hosted on Microsoft Azure, increasing access to Isaac Sim, the company’s platform for developing and managing artificial intelligence-based robots.

The company also says that a full lineup of Jetson Orin modules is now available, offering a “performance leap” for edge AI and robotics applications. [Read more…] about Nvidia expands availability of its robotics development software and hardware

A legged robotic system for playing soccer on various terrains

April 4, 2023 by Mark Allinson

The new system enables a quadruped robot to dribble a soccer ball on landscapes such as sand, gravel, mud, and snow, using reinforcement learning to adapt to varying ball dynamics

If you’ve ever played soccer with a robot, it’s a familiar feeling. Sun glistens down on your face as the smell of grass permeates the air. You look around. A four-legged robot is hustling towards you, dribbling with determination.

While not a common occurrence for many, nor anything close to a well-matched adversary to Lionel Messi, it’s an impressive in-the-wild dribbling system nonetheless.

Researchers from MIT’s Improbable Artificial Intelligence Lab, part of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory developed a legged robotic system that can dribble a soccer ball under the same conditions as humans. Exotec manufactures milestone 5,000th robot in record time

April 4, 2023 by Mark Allinson

Exotec, a warehouse robotics provider, has manufactured its 5,000th robot, just three months after the production of its 4,000th robot.

The company claims this is the “shortest time yet” between manufacturing milestones, signifying an increasing business momentum driven by the growing demand for warehouse automation.

The completion of the 5,000th robot, which will be named “Monu” (short for “Monumental”), is a landmark moment for the industrial unicorn, which has seen considerable growth across the UK, Europe and internationally. [Read more…] about Exotec manufactures milestone 5,000th robot in record time

Körber develops new robotic system for de-palletizing pallets to trays

March 31, 2023 by Mark Allinson

Körber Supply Chain says it has “solved” the pallet-to-tray issues many warehouses face – the company has developed a new “turnkey system solution” for de-palletizing pallets to trays.

With the launch of a new de-palletization system, Körber Supply Chain claims it has become “the first supplier of automated logistics solutions to offer a total turnkey solution for the separation of goods from pallet to tray”.

Körber says its goal is to fully automate and eliminate risks and sudden downtime in the sorting process. [Read more…] about Körber develops new robotic system for de-palletizing pallets to trays

Will a robot take my job? Notre Dame researcher says this view is overly pessimistic

March 31, 2023 by Mark Allinson

With the impact of industrial robots on the US labor markets in the past two decades, and an ever-increasing presence of machine-driven technology (such as artificial intelligence and ChatGPT), many employees have feared that one day robots will take their jobs.

Not necessarily so, according to research recently published by Yong Suk Lee, an assistant professor in the University of Notre Dame’s Keough School of Global Affairs.

He and his co-author, Auburn University’s John Chung, found that industrial robots, particularly those used within the automotive industry, complemented human workers rather than replaced them – some even working collaboratively, side-by-side.
