Okuma unveils machining center that forms and finishes metal parts in ‘one setup’

Okuma has unveiled a new machining center that it says can form and finishes large metal parts and components in one setup.

The company says its MCR-S double column machining center “combines cutting-edge technology and process improvements to reduce cycle time by 25 percent”.

Okuma is one of the largest manufacturers of CNC machine tools, and says its MCR-S roughs and finishes press dies in one setup and is designed for heavy duty machining of process-intensive press dies. Siemens, IBM and Red Hat launch cloud initiative to ‘increase real-time value of industrial data’

Siemens, IBM and Red Hat have launched a new collaboration that will use a hybrid cloud designed to deliver an open, flexible and more secure solution for manufacturers and plant operators to “drive real-time value from operational data”.

In one month, a single manufacturing site can generate more than 2,200 terabytes of data according to a report by IBM – yet most data goes unanalyzed.

Through the joint initiative, Siemens Digital Industries Software will apply IBM’s open hybrid cloud approach, built on Red Hat OpenShift, to extend the deployment flexibility of MindSphere, the industrial internet of things as a service solution from Siemens. Seoul Robotics launches ‘breakthrough’ perception software platform

​Seoul Robotics​, a 3D computer vision company using AI and machine learning to power the future of mobility, has made its formal debut in the US market with the launch of its first commercial product, Discovery.

The company, which has been developing sensor agnostic perception software for 3D sensors for the past three years, provides large-scale companies, institutions, and governments with access to LiDAR solutions to support a range of functions and increase efficiency and safety.

40 North Ventures acquires 11 companies from GE Ventures

40 North Ventures, an early-to-growth stage venture capital fund focused on technology investments in the industrial sector, has acquired investments in 11 companies from GE Ventures.

Although 40 North Ventures is not disclosing the value of this deal, the fund raised $200 million last year. This was in part utilized for the acquisition from GE Ventures, as well as four prior investments, according to a spokesperson.

Buyers don’t all know the potential of robots nor who can supply them, says Lux Research

Potential buyers are not aware of the potential of robots, nor which companies can supply and integrate them into their business, according to a report by Lux Research.

The research company says businesses are “increasingly using robotics” across a wide variety of industries, but many companies still fail to understand what’s currently possible with today’s technology or which vendors can provide the solutions they need.
