Nvidia launches new SoC and software-defined platform for autonomous cars and robots

Nvidia has introduced a new, “highly advanced” software-defined platform for autonomous vehicles and robots.

The Nvidia Drive AGX Orin platform is powered by a new system-on-a-chip (SoC) called Orin, which consists of 17 billion transistors and is the result of four years of research and development investment.

The Orin SoC integrates Nvidia’s next-generation GPU architecture and Arm Hercules CPU cores, as well as new deep learning and computer vision accelerators that, in aggregate, deliver 200 trillion operations per second – nearly seven times the performance of Nvidia’s previous generation Xavier SoC. Mazak showcases machining centre with ‘world’s fastest CNC’

Mazak has demonstrated a new machining centre which it says has the “world’s fastest CNC”.

Mazak says its Integrex i-400S Multi-Tasking machining centre at the upcoming Autosport Engineering and Southern Manufacturing 2019 exhibitions.

Mitsubishi launches ‘smallest, most compact’ programmable logic controller

Mitsubishi Electric has released the company’s smallest and most powerful compact programmable logic controller to date – the FX5UC series Premium Micro PLC.

The company says the new PLC’s diminutive size is set to help machine builders and manufacturers pack “ever more functionality into a smaller space”, while also providing the web access and network connectivity demanded by the latest smart factory applications.

Airbus inaugurates ‘highly automated’ assembly line in Germany

Airbus has inaugurated its “highly automated” fuselage structure assembly line for A320 Family aircraft in Hamburg, showcasing an evolution in Airbus’ industrial production system.

With a special focus on manufacturing longer sections for the A321LR, the new facility features 20 robots, a new logistics concept, automated positioning by laser measurement as well as a digital data acquisition system.

Corindus instrument used in ‘world’s first’ remote-control robotic heart surgery

A surgical instrument developed by Corindus has been used in what is claimed to be the first remote-controlled heart operation using a robot.

Corindus published its “Telerobotic Intervention Study” in The Lancet, saying it is “the world’s first percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures conducted from a remote location outside the catheterization lab using Corindus’ CorPath technology platform”.

The paper Corindus published, titled Long Distance Telerobotic-Assisted Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: First-in-Human Experience, discusses five successful patient cases performed by internationally acclaimed physician Dr Tejas Patel, chairman and chief interventional cardiologist of the Apex Heart Institute in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Nuro and Domino’s partner on autonomous pizza delivery

Nuro, a developer of driverless road-going vehicles, is partnering with fast-food chain Domino’s to deliver pizzas to customers at their homes.

A statement on Nuro’s blog says: “We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve partnered with Domino’s, the world’s largest pizza company, to deliver pizza autonomously.”

Geek Plus Robotics wins award at Deliver e-logistics event

Geek Plus Robotics has won an award at the Deliver e-logistics event, which this year took place in Lisbon, Portugal. 

The warehouse robotics and automation specialist was awarded the “Rising Star” prize in recognition of its spectacular growth since the company was founded four years ago, and especially for its progress in the past couple of years.

Geek Plus says it is particularly pleased with this award because it was voted for by retailers. “We believe that this award would further encourage us to the next level and provide more efficient solutions to the logistics industry,” said a spokesperson for the company.
