Empowering older adults with home-care robots

December 19, 2024 by Farhana Ali

Researchers assess factors influencing willingness to use home-care robots among caregivers and older adults in Japan, Ireland, and Finland

The rapidly increasing aging population will lead to a shortage of care providers in the future. While robotic technologies are a potential alternative, their widespread use is limited by poor acceptance.

In a new study, researchers from Chiba University have examined a user-centric approach to understand the factors influencing user willingness among caregivers and recipients in Japan, Ireland, and Finland. Users’ perspectives can aid the development of home-care robots with better acceptance.

Advances in medicine have led to an increase in human longevity. Estimates suggest that by 2030, one in every six individuals globally will be aged over 60 years. This rapid increase in the aging population implies a larger number of aged individuals requiring care. [Read more…] about Empowering older adults with home-care robots

Robotic perception continues to evolve in the warehouse, says Exotec

December 18, 2024 by Anika Haque

AI and ML are helping warehouse robots better understand their environment and how to interact with it, helping them to operate more effectively

Robots continue to make their mark in the warehouse, working alongside humans, and as they evolve, so do their perception systems.

According to Exotec, the growth of AI and machine learning is playing an instrumental role in driving this improvement, as robots are continuing to adapt to their surroundings and fine-tune their operations.

Robotic perception is the ability of a robot to perceive, comprehend and reason about the environment in which it operates. Perception is the first step in robotic movement, enabling it to make correct decisions when complimenting or in partnership with humans in the warehouse. Opinion: Will autonomous cars ever gain regulatory approval to operate freely on public roads?

December 13, 2024 by Mark Allinson

The news that General Motors has decided to fold Cruise into its overall business should send shock waves through the industry. If Cruise can’t do it, with all its money and giant parent’s backing, who can?

Cruise is a relatively new startup which had huge optimism around it because several billion dollars were invested into it and a lot of people still believe autonomous cars are the future of global road traffic.

But after burning through $10 billion and only generating $500 million in revenue, Cruise seems to have lost its parent company’s confidence and has now been absorbed into the historic automotive giant, with its technology being repackaged into GM production cars as, essentially, an advanced driver assistance system called “Super Cruise”.
