Food manufacturers are turning to robots to meet customers’ needs, says ING report

The importance of technology for food manufacturers continues to grow, according to a new ING report, Food tech: technology in the food industry.

The research report revealed the use of robots in the European food industry is becoming more commonplace, with a 50 per cent increase in the sale of robots to the food industry over the last five years.

Texas university wins Sick robotics challenge

A team from Texas A&M University has won this year’s robotics challenge organized by Sick.

For the 2018-2019 school year, Sick invited students from universities around the country to participate in the first ever TiM$10K Challenge, created to support innovation and student achievement in automation and technology.

Teams were supplied with a 270° Sick LiDAR sensor (TiM) and accessories and challenged to solve a problem, create a solution, or bring a new application to any industry that utilizes the Sick LiDAR.

Australian university focuses on future food systems

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) researchers will play a key part in developing smart logistics to link growers with their markets and high-tech methods of growing customised food, with the announcement of the Future Food Systems Cooperative Research Centre.

The Future Food Systems CRC will involve more than 50 commercial and research partners, with the Federal Government injecting AUS$35 million in funding over 10 years along with almost AUS$150 million in support from the research centre’s educational and commercial participants.

QUT’s involvement in the CRC is spread across the centre’s three research and development programs of planning and logistics in linking growers to their markets, developing smart automated indoor cropping and creating nutrient-dense foods and hybrid food and medical goods tailored to growing domestic and export markets.

WeRide to launch first commercial autonomous taxi service in China

A startup called WeRide is set to become the first company to launch a commercial autonomous taxi service in China, according to a report on Nikkei.

WeRide is developing Level 4 technology, which is “full autonomy with human”, and is the second-highest level of autonomy, or L5, on engineering association SAE’s list.

WeRide will demonstrate its L4 sensor suite and pre-commercial solutions during the Nvidia GPU Technology Conference, scheduled for late June.

ThyssenKrupp completes its ‘biggest ever’ automated mobility contract

ThyssenKrupp, one of the world’s leading suppliers of elevators and escalators, says it has completed its “biggest ever” contract in Sweden.

The work involved the iconic Urban Escape project in Stockholm.

ThyssenKrupp was asked to supply 53 elevators, 27 escalators and 15 platform lifts for the project.

Sony and Docomo to test driverless concept vehicle via 5G trial network in Guam

Sony Corporation and NTT Docomo, Inc. will jointly trial Sony’s conceptual driverless vehicle, the New Concept Cart SC-1, which uses 5G mobile technologies for various remotely controlled functions.

The test will be conducted using the trial network in Docomo 5G Open Lab Guam, which will provide test facilities and an outdoor verification environment constructed by Docomo.

The test will verify data transmission and operational performance required to remotely control the cart from a long distance via the extra-high speed, large capacity, low latency and massive-device connectivity.

Epson signs Interfaced Technologies as distributor in Canada

Epson Robots, a supplier of SCARA robots, has signed Interfaced Technologies, a distributor of industrial assembly technology and equipment, as an official distributor for the full line of Epson Robots automation products.

This includes Epson SCARA, 6-Axis and Linear Module robots as well as integrated solutions such as the IntelliFlex Feeding System, Vision Guide, Force Guide and many other industrial automation products offered by Epson Robots.

ADAS: Top 40 advanced driver assistance systems companies

The term “advanced driver assistance systems”, or ADAS, refers to a collection of automotive electronics technologies which are designed to enable vehicles to operate autonomously in certain situations.

The market for ADAS is forecast to be worth around $70 billion by 2025, according to Grand View Research. And although it’s already a huge market, a lot of the activity now is with the future in mind, a future in which many believe autonomous and electric cars will dominate.

Toyota, Denso, and SoftBank pledge another $1 billion investment for Uber

Taxi-sharing app maker Uber has been promised $1 billion in investment from companies including Toyota, Denso, and SoftBank Vision Fund.

The new funds will help accelerate the development and commercialization of its ridesharing services, says Uber in a statement.
