Volvo Group partners with Nvidia on AI platform for autonomous trucks

The Volvo Group has signed an agreement with Nvidia to jointly develop the decision-making system of autonomous commercial vehicles and machines.

Using Nvidia’s end-to-end artificial intelligence platform for training, simulation and in-vehicle computing, the resulting system is designed to safely handle fully autonomous driving on public roads and highways.

The solution will be built on Nvidia’s full software stack for sensor processing, perception, map localisation and path planning, enabling a wide range of possible autonomous driving applications, such as freight transport, refuse and recycling collection, public transport, construction, mining, forestry and more.

Denso and Honeywell partner on urban air mobility

Denso has partnered with Honeywell to develop hybrid-electric and fully-electric propulsion systems for urban air mobility.

By converging their automotive and aerospace expertise, Denso and Honeywell seek to create propulsion systems that make air travel cleaner, quieter, more efficient and easier to maintain.

Urban air mobility is intended to provide more efficient movement of people and things within cities to improve safety and decrease ground traffic.

ABB expands e-Bus charging portfolio with automated pantograph

ABB has launched of the latest addition to its e-Bus charging portfolio, Panto Up at public transport show UITP 2019 in Stockholm, Sweden.

It has been designed to provide a flexible, efficient and fully automated charging solution for larger fleets of electric buses, where limited depot space has driven the decision to select buses with a roof mounted pantograph.

Panto Up, combined with ABB’s sequential charging system for a depot, is a charging concept which enables sequential overnight charging of up to three buses at the same time, with an available power range of 50-150kW per vehicle.

New Mercedes-AMG four-cylinder turbo engine now in series production

The completely newly developed Mercedes-AMG 2.0-litre M 139 engine is the world’s most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine in series production, claims Daimler.

With this engine, Mercedes-AMG has even exceeded the previously most powerful M 133 by 30 kW (41 hp).

Maximum torque has also increased from 475 to up to 500 nm. With an output per litre of up to 155 kW (211 hp), the new Mercedes-AMG high-performance turbo engine  ranks ahead of many well-known super-sports car engines, says Daimler.

General Motors to invest $24 million to expand truck production at Indiana plant

General Motors Co. (GM) is making a new round of upgrades to its Fort Wayne Assembly plant in Indiana, USA, to further increase production of the all-new Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups – especially crew cab models.

Combined sales of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab pickups, which launched in the second half of 2018, were up 20 percent in the first quarter of 2019 versus a year ago.

GM is projecting another significant increase for the second quarter. Customer deliveries of the double-cab models built in Fort Wayne began during the first quarter.

BMW Group opens plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico

The BMW Group has opened a new automotive plant in San Luis Potosi in Mexico.

The company has invested more than one billion US dollars in the new production location. The plant, which already employs 2,500 people, will have a capacity of up to 175,000 units per year once the ramp-up phase is fully completed.

San Luis Potosi will build BMW’s most successful model series: the BMW 3 Series Sedan.

Dongfeng Honda completes construction of third auto plant in Wuhan, China

Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co., Ltd., a Honda automobile production and sales joint venture in China, has completed construction of its third automobile plant in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China.

As a new plant capable of responding flexibly to the advancement of products, including the acceleration of electrification, this plant will accommodate production of electrified models.

The new plant is equipped with a water recycling system and emission treatment equipment which makes it more environmentally responsible and achieves high efficiency through proactive adoption of automation in each production process.

Continental presents technology to extend the range of electric vehicles

At the 32nd Electric Vehicle Symposium last month in Lyon, France, experts from Continental‘s powertrain business gave presentations on innovations for a more efficient electromobility.

As the general interest in electromobility and electric vehicles (EVs) is on the up, the company believes it is important to ensure that using an EV is practical on a day-to-day level.

Thermal Management on a system level, for instance, can help to achieve a considerably longer vehicle range despite cold or hot ambient temperatures.

ABB and Octopus Group collaborate on e-mobility

ABB is to collaborate with UK-headquartered financial services and clean energy firm, Octopus Group.

Together, ABB and Octopus Group seek to explore and develop further e-mobility market offerings that will support fleet operators to achieve a transition to zero emission transport.

Operators will be able to source the required mobility investment from Octopus Group, through flexible financing models and renewable electricity supply, while ABB will provide its EV charging infrastructure and energy technologies to deliver the transition to electric buses and commercial fleets.

Michelin and GM present airless car tyres

Michelin and General Motors have presented a new generation of airless wheel technology, the MICHELIN Uptis Prototype (or “Unique Puncture-proof Tire System”).

GM intends to develop this airless wheel assembly with Michelin and aims to introduce it on passenger vehicles as early as 2024.

Later this year, GM will initiate real-world testing and validation of the Uptis Prototype on a Michigan test fleet of Chevrolet Bolt EVs.
