Country Insight: The potential for development in communist North Korea

June 14, 2018 by David Edwards

Trump-Kim_meeting_in_Capella_Hotel_(1)

North Korea is often referred to as a hermit kingdom of sorts, or the last bastion of communism remaining in today’s largely capitalist world.

But it’s probably more accurate to think of it as a militaristic nation which has been on a war footing ever since the 1950s when it was the battleground for forces from the US, UN and China, as well as its own.

So, for the past 70 years, the country’s population of 25 million have had to live on food rations provided by the communist government.  [Read more…] about Country Insight: The potential for development in communist North Korea

Opinion: Chinese automakers are better off innovating in electric and autonomous technology

June 14, 2018 by David Edwards

It could be time for international carmakers to consider changing partners in China. While the Chinese government has encouraged partnerships in the hope that local companies will learn and become global, new electric and autonomous technologies seem to offer better opportunities. Article by Edward Tse, Gao Feng Advisory

On April 17th China’s National Development and Reform Commission announced the elimination of foreign equity restrictions on special-purpose vehicles and new energy vehicles in 2018, on commercial vehicles in 2020 and on passenger vehicles in 2022.

In addition to the opportunity to own their own manufacturing ventures, foreign automakers are no longer restricted to having only two joint ventures in China.

The 50:50 joint venture equity rule dates back to 1994. The government hoped a domestic industry would emerge whereby the Chinese domestic companies would learn from their partners and eventually emerge as successful global automakers in their own right.  [Read more…] about Opinion: Chinese automakers are better off innovating in electric and autonomous technology

Hitachi helps ferry operator Stena Line to increase business performance while maintaining its commitment to sustainable shipping operations

Hitachi has partnered with Stena Line, one of the largest shipping companies in Europe, to implement artificial intelligence technology on ships to reduce fuel consumption costs and become an important tool in the company’s efforts to minimise environmental impact.

The partnership will see a team of Hitachi experts from across its business units review the existing digital architecture, in close collaboration with Stena Line, and advise the ferry company as it aims to become the world’s leading cognitive shipping company by 2021.

Controlling fuel consumption is vital to Stena Line’s business since it is a major part of their total cost base.  [Read more…] about AI, captain! Hitachi partners with Stena Line to implement digital technology in shipping

Film review: Don’t look at the ‘Bright’ light. I can’t help it

June 11, 2018 by David Edwards

bright noomi-rapace

Many years ago, there was an animated film called A Bug’s Life which made the line “Don’t look at the light” famous. It was uttered by some sort of flying insect as a warning to a fellow flying insect who was gravitating towards a lamp which would inevitably harm it. The line was mainly funny because of the response, which was: “I can’t help it.”

This exchange could be said to be at the heart of the film Bright, which was released towards the end of last year and stars Will Smith as a cop in some sort of futuristic nightmare world called Los Angeles, which is full of street gangs and what look like genetically modified humanoids called Orcs and Elves.

Oh, that’s what Los Angeles looks like now? I see. As with many films like this, “futuristic” is either a relative or irrelevant term.  [Read more…] about Film review: Don’t look at the ‘Bright’ light. I can’t help it

Top 10 most memorable films and TV shows with robots in them

May 16, 2018 by David Edwards

terminator image small

You probably know the winner without looking – I’ve chosen The Terminator, the 1984 movie when Arnold Schwarzenegger was in his prime and when films still required good stories and plot twists and could not rely entirely on special effects to wow audiences.

There are probably others on the list you can guess, but that is the nature of such collections – most of us can agree on them.

There are probably no surprises, but then surprises are probably overrated, especially in a world where the word “surprise” is often deliberately or unwittingly substituted for “trauma” or “shock” and expected to be laughed off by people who may or may not know the difference.  [Read more…] about Top 10 most memorable films and TV shows with robots in them
