Increasing last mile delivery security and intelligence

April 20, 2022 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

The biggest issue facing logistics firms, as identified by Barclays, is delivering goods when recipients are not present, with over 63 percent of carriers stating this as a concern

The last mile plays a pivotal role in the supply chain, as recent research indicates that the last mile accounts for approximately 28 percent of the total cost of delivery.

Industry challenge

Consumer pressures concerning time to delivery and overall experience have forced logistics firms to invest in new innovative solutions to manage their delivery operations, in particular to improve operational efficiency in the last mile.

Southco has been working with the postal and delivery industry to help achieve these goals by improving critical areas of delivery solution performance, including security and operating costs. [Read more…] about Increasing last mile delivery security and intelligence

Google launches last mile fleet solution and cloud fleet routing API

March 29, 2022 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

Google has launched its Last Mile Fleet Solution from Google Maps Platform and Cloud Fleet Routing API from Google Cloud – two new solutions to help fleet operators improve delivery success and optimize fleet performance.

The pandemic has accelerated e-commerce adoption and strained supply chains, while consumer expectations around delivery speed and visibility have reached an all-time high. At the same time, last-mile delivery is estimated to make up more than half of total shipping costs.

This means last-mile fleet operators have to work harder to create better consumer experiences and improve their operations. [Read more…] about Google launches last mile fleet solution and cloud fleet routing API

Sea Machines embarks on ‘world’s first’ autonomous, remotely commanded voyage by an ocean tugboat

September 18, 2021 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

In a milestone moment slated to prove that the world’s waterways are primed and ready for autonomous technology, Sea Machines will circumnavigate Denmark on a multi-week 1,000 nautical mile remotely commanded commercial voyage.

Sea Machines Robotics, a developer of autonomous command and control systems for the maritime industry, says it will embark on a 1,000 nautical mile autonomous and remotely commanded journey around Denmark later this month.

Aptly named “The Machine Odyssey”, the voyage marks a landmark moment for autonomous transportation and is slated to prove that the world’s waterways are primed and ready for long-range autonomy.

The Machine Odyssey will depart from Hamburg, Germany, on September 30, with full onboard vessel control managed by autonomous technology, while operating under the authority of commanding officers located in the United States. Last mile: Micro-fulfillment centers bring supply chains to the consumer

February 2, 2021 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

Over the last few years, as e-commerce sales have increased and customer expectations have shifted, there has been a steady race to move fulfillment closer to the customer.

Something once so innovative as two-day delivery has led to next-day delivery, which is quickly becoming obsolete as consumers demand same-day delivery.

This trend has accelerated during the Covid-19 pandemic, especially as more consumers become comfortable with online ordering of perishable items and groceries. One of the significant changes in supply chain strategies we are seeing as a result of this is the rise of fulfillment centers that bring fulfillment closer to the consumer.
