Yaskawa opens new production facility in Slovenia

Following two years of construction, Japanese technology group Yaskawa has officially opened its new robot production facility with European robotics development center at Kočevje, Slovenia. (See video below.)

Yaskawa already started European production of its Motoman robots at the end of 2018. The investment volume is about 25 million euros.

The new plant supplements the existing production facilities in Japan and China and will satisfy about 80 per cent of the European demand for Motoman robots.

ABB to install 300 painting robots at leading Chinese automaker’s facility

ABB has signed a formal agreement to install 300 painting robots at a leading Chinese automaker’s facility.

The agreement with SAIC Volkswagen is to provide robotics painting solutions for the first New Energy Vehicle factory of the Volkswagen Group based on the Modular Electric Driver Kit, an automotive platform specifically designed for the mass production of electric vehicles.

Australian university focuses on future food systems

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) researchers will play a key part in developing smart logistics to link growers with their markets and high-tech methods of growing customised food, with the announcement of the Future Food Systems Cooperative Research Centre.

The Future Food Systems CRC will involve more than 50 commercial and research partners, with the Federal Government injecting AUS$35 million in funding over 10 years along with almost AUS$150 million in support from the research centre’s educational and commercial participants.

QUT’s involvement in the CRC is spread across the centre’s three research and development programs of planning and logistics in linking growers to their markets, developing smart automated indoor cropping and creating nutrient-dense foods and hybrid food and medical goods tailored to growing domestic and export markets.

Robotic toymaker Anki to close down

Anki, a startup company which made robotic toy cars and trucks, is planning to close its doors, according to a report on the Recode website.

The company had raised more than $200 million in funding for the venture, and generated $100 million in revenue in 2017, but is now making all of its 200 employees redundant.

In a statement to Recode, the company says that it had been left “without significant funding” which meant it could not finance its hardware and software development plans going forward.

Advanced robotics have the power to transform manufacturing and logistics, says BCG

Manufacturing leaders believe advanced robotics systems will transform industrial operations going forward, according to a new report by the Boston Consulting Group.

BCG found that executives from all industries see a gap between their ambitions for advanced robotics and the current level of implementation.

The research company interviewed more than 1,300 executives from manufacturing and many other industries for its report, The Factory of the Future.

It found that more than 70 percent believe that the new opportunities offered by advanced robotics will be “very relevant to their future production”.

Some 52 percent expect advanced robotics to become one of the most important “drivers of productivity improvement by 2025”.

Gap between demand and implementation

Additionally, the executives say that combining advanced robotics with other technologies, process enhancements, and structural layout changes can yield savings of up to 40 percent.

BCG found that European and Asian companies currently lead in implementing advanced robots, while implementation in North America has proceeded more slowly.

In each of the 12 countries in BCG’s study, most of the companies we surveyed plan to implement advanced robotics within the next three years.

Companies in emerging nations, especially China and India, tend to be “even more enthusiastic” than those in industrialized nations about using advanced robots, even though the savings achieved by replacing manual activities would not be as high.

These companies may be looking to automation as a way to compensate for a shortage of skilled labor and to improve quality, thereby enhancing their ability to compete in international markets, say the authors.

They add that “significant government funding and less concern about job losses help to fuel excitement about technology”.

The size of the company affects robotics adoption. Small businesses are less likely than large businesses to use advanced robotics applications.

Among companies with revenues exceeding $1 billion, 90 percent have already implemented advanced robotics applications, but the share of implementers among companies with revenues of less than $250 million is significantly lower.

Small businesses’ lower level of adoption probably reflects budgetary constraints with respect to testing applications and gaining access to robotics-related expertise.

Implications for robot manufacturers

Advanced robotics systems offer great opportunities for established producers of robots, producers of other advanced auto­mation solutions, and new entrants in the field.

But, according to BCG, robot producers must also deal with significant challenges, including the need for high research and development investments and the need to forecast sales accurately in an increasingly complex environment.

Indeed, some prominent producers of advanced robots have gone out of business as a result of disappointing sales, says BCG.

Because some promised breakthroughs have failed to materialize, many executives of companies that purchase robotics solutions are skeptical when robotics producers or market experts describe significant technological advances.

Survey participants say that they require not only mature and robust technologies, but also lower investment costs.

To meet users’ expectations, robot producers must focus on improving both software and hardware:

Software will be the primary differentiator for advanced robotics systems, says BCG.

Producers can use software as the basis for new business models, including the monetization of pushed upgrades, subscription-­based pricing, and performance-­based contracts.

However, they must ensure that their solutions can be integrated into their customers’ system architecture.

To reduce the need for complicated programming on the shop floor, it is essential to improve user interfaces. Conventional industrial robots’ interfaces fall short of meeting usability requirements.

Advances in augmented reality, natural-language processing, haptic feedback, and computer vision offer intriguing opportunities to improve interfaces.

Producers must further leverage or adapt sensors for industrial applications. Scale effects resulting from higher demand in the automotive and consumer industries will help to reduce costs in this area.

Although mechanical systems of industrial robots are already quite mature, improvements are needed in modularity, flexibility, dexterity, and mobility.

“Robot producers can leverage materials that possess enhanced characteristics to improve the capabilities of robots and broaden the areas of application,” says BCG.

Sony and Docomo to test driverless concept vehicle via 5G trial network in Guam

Sony Corporation and NTT Docomo, Inc. will jointly trial Sony’s conceptual driverless vehicle, the New Concept Cart SC-1, which uses 5G mobile technologies for various remotely controlled functions.

The test will be conducted using the trial network in Docomo 5G Open Lab Guam, which will provide test facilities and an outdoor verification environment constructed by Docomo.

The test will verify data transmission and operational performance required to remotely control the cart from a long distance via the extra-high speed, large capacity, low latency and massive-device connectivity.

Daimler Trucks set to acquire majority stake in Torc Robotics

Daimler Trucks, a division in the Daimler Group, and Torc Robotics, a pioneer in autonomous driving solutions, are joining forces in a one-of-a-kind combination to commercialise highly automated trucks (SAE Level 4) on U.S. roads.

The companies have signed an agreement whereby Daimler Trucks and Buses Holding Inc. will acquire a majority stake in Torc Robotics for an undisclosed sum. Closing of the acquisition is subject to approval from U.S. authorities.

“Bringing Torc Robotics within the Daimler Trucks family creates a unique and powerful team of innovators to put highly automated trucks on the road,” said Martin Daum, Member of the Board of Management Daimler AG, responsible for Trucks and Buses.

Locus Robotics raises $26 million in new investment

Supply chain automation startup Locus Robotics has raised $26 million in Series C funding.

The company says it will use the proceeds to scale production of its revolutionary multi-bot solution for warehouse fulfillment, as well as for expansion of its sales and marketing efforts, both in North America, and internationally.

Esmera launches new robotics competition – each winner to receive more than €200,000

An EU-backed project called the European SMEs Robotic Applications, or Esmera, has launched a competition to find solutions to industrial end-user challenges.

Esmera says it is looking for real-life problems in which providers would like to introduce a robotics solution.

Honeywell unveils automated robotic unloader for distribution centres

Honeywell has announced a new automated robotic solution for unloading packages from truck trailers and shipping containers at distribution centres.

The robotic unloader uses artificial intelligence to operate fully autonomously inside of a trailer, which significantly reduces the manual effort required to operate receiving docks for retail merchandise and parcel distribution centres.

It drives into a trailer or container and uses machine vision to identify various package shapes and sizes as well as the optimal approach to unloading.
