Car Exports 101

April 13, 2022 by David Edwards Leave a Comment

The automotive industry is a vital part of the global economy, and the export of cars is a significant contributor to this.

There are several reasons countries export cars. For example, a country may have a surplus of cars that it cannot sell domestically, or it may seek to take advantage of attractive foreign markets.

Whatever the reason, exporting cars can be a complex process, and there are a number of things that need to be taken into consideration. [Read more…] about Car Exports 101

New S&P Analysis: Stressed semiconductor industry needs water, gets liberal sprinkling of state support

May 31, 2021 by Mai Tao Leave a Comment

By Christopher Rogers, senior researcher, Panjiva, part of S&P Global

The global semiconductor industry is in the midst of a period of upheaval driven by both short- and long-term factors.

The most obvious has been the imbalance in supply versus demand shown by shortages in the automotive industry, as discussed in Panjiva’s research of May 18, resulting in higher prices.

There are also emergent challenges from water shortages in Taiwan – which accounted for 14.4 percent of global exports in 2019 – that are causing power shortages and potential semiconductor fabrication facility closures, according to Nikkei Asia. Chinese media clamour suggests restrictions on rare earth metals exports to US

May 29, 2019 by Mai Tao

Chinese media outlets are raising the possibility of restrictions on the export of rare earth metals to the US.

The move could be the most effective response to US President Donald Trump’s decision to increase and broaden import tariffs on Chinese goods into the country.

According to the South China Morning Post, the ruling Communist Party’s propaganda outlet, People’s Daily, said in a commentary: “The Chinese people would never agree to the US using products made from rare earths exported from China to curb and suppress China’s development.” [Read more…] about Chinese media clamour suggests restrictions on rare earth metals exports to US

Trump trade tariffs to hit $300 billion worth of Chinese goods

May 14, 2019 by Mai Tao

US President Donald Trump’s proposed increase in tariffs will hit $350 billion worth of goods imported from China, according to economic analysts.

Trump announced his intention to impose the additional tariffs recently in a tweet, but the US and China are currently locked in trade talks and there may be some modifications to the proposal.

The effects of his announcement, however, have been far-reaching, and are said to be the reason for the $1 trillion fall in share prices around the world.
