Bosch says its new chip is ‘revolutionizing navigation’

June 25, 2020 by David Edwards

Bosch, one of the world’s largest suppliers of automotive components, says a new chip has invented is “revolutionizing navigation”.

The company says its new MEMS sensor – the SMI230 – is a highly precise sensor which constantly registers changes in the vehicle’s direction and speed, evaluates the information, and transmits it to the navigation system.

There, the information is combined with the positional data from the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and used for navigation. [Read more…] about Bosch says its new chip is ‘revolutionizing navigation’

Bosch launches app to give electric vehicle drivers access to 150,000 charging spots in 16 European countries

June 15, 2020 by David Edwards

Bosch has launched an app – Charge My EV – that provides electric vehicle drivers with access to “150,000 electric vehicle charging spots in 16 European countries”.

The company says this makes it one of the biggest pan-European recharging networks.

Bosch says it has set itself the goal of putting an end to the “recharging muddle” where drivers of electric cars have an average of six recharging apps on their smartphones, and have to juggle as many as five recharging access cards. How driverless shuttle vehicles can get safely from A to B

April 27, 2020 by David Edwards

Project 3F, a consortium of six partners led by Bosch, has presented its results for automated driving in the low-speed range. (See video below.)

Their main finding is that the vehicle can continue driving despite deviations on the specified route and technical failures in the system.

The transport of people and goods were tested on test tracks in Renningen and Aachen, Germany. [Read more…] about How driverless shuttle vehicles can get safely from A to B

Bosch Rexroth adopts Ubuntu Core and snaps for app-based ctrlX Automation platform

February 26, 2020 by David Edwards

Bosch Rexroth has selected Ubuntu Core for its app-based platform ctrlX Automation.

ctrlX Automation leverages Ubuntu Core, designed for embedded devices, and snaps, the universal Linux application containers, to deliver an open source platform to remove the barriers between machine control, operation technology and information technology, or OT-IT.

Industrial manufacturing solutions built on ctrlX Automation with Ubuntu Core and snaps will benefit from an open ecosystem, faster time to production and stronger security across devices’ lifecycle. Bosch increases stake in fuel-cell maker Ceres Power to €90 million

January 23, 2020 by Sam Francis

Bosch is strengthening its strategic collaboration with fuel-cell expert Ceres Power by increasing its stake to 18 per cent.

Bosch, an industrial giant and a leading provider of automotive systems, previously had a stake in Ceres of 3.9 per cent.

The stake increase is achieved through a subscription by Bosch for new Ceres Power shares, as well as the purchase of further shares from existing shareholders. [Read more…] about Bosch increases stake in fuel-cell maker Ceres Power to €90 million

Bosch claims ‘complete’ sensor portfolio for autonomous driving

January 6, 2020 by David Edwards

Bosch says it has now “completed” its sensor portfolio for automated driving, with long-range lidar complementing radar and cameras.

Bosch is one of the world’s leading suppliers of components for advanced driver assistance systems, or ADAS, which is an umbrella term referring to the autonomous functions in the newer cars on the roads today.

Example of ADAS features include automatic emergency braking, cruise control, and self-parking. But this is growing and becoming more sophisticated and integrated. [Read more…] about Bosch claims ‘complete’ sensor portfolio for autonomous driving

Bosch and CATL partner to manufacture 48-volt battery cells

December 12, 2019 by David Edwards

Bosch and Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) have concluded a long-term strategic cooperation agreement.

The partners are going to jointly specify high-performance battery cells. CATL will then design, develop, and manufacture these cells in accordance with Bosch requirements.

The cells are to be used in the 48-volt battery developed by Bosch. [Read more…] about Bosch and CATL partner to manufacture 48-volt battery cells

Bosch and Mercedes-Benz start automated ride-hailing service in San José

December 10, 2019 by David Edwards

Bosch and Mercedes-Benz’s joint project to develop urban automated driving has now entered a new stage.

Their pilot project for an app-based ride-hailing service using automated Mercedes-Benz S-Class vehicles has now been launched in the Silicon Valley city of San José.

Monitored by a safety driver, the self-driving cars shuttle between West San José and downtown, along the San Carlos Street and Stevens Creek Boulevard thoroughfares. [Read more…] about Bosch and Mercedes-Benz start automated ride-hailing service in San José

Bosch ‘poised for leap’ in e-mobility with new silicon carbide semiconductors

November 28, 2019 by David Edwards

Bosch says it is poised to make a technological “leap” in electric mobility as a result of developing new silicon carbide semiconductors.

The vast majority of semiconductors today are made using common silicon, which makes up 25 per cent of Earth’s crust, but silicon carbide is generally made from an extremely rare mineral called “moissanite”.

Bosch is secretive about its technology, but Harold Kroeger, member of the Bosch board of management, says: “Silicon carbide semiconductors will transform e-mobility.” [Read more…] about Bosch ‘poised for leap’ in e-mobility with new silicon carbide semiconductors

Bosch receives massive €13 billion worth of electromobility orders

October 4, 2019 by David Edwards

When it comes to electromobility, Bosch says it is “driving in the fast lane”.

Electromobility is a general term referring to electric-powered drivetrains designed to shift vehicle design away from the use of fossil fuels and carbon gas emissions.

Bosch claims that “no other company has as much expertise” in this domain. The giant company has long been one of the world’s leading suppliers of existing automotive technologies.

Bosch’s relatively newly acquired expertise in electromobility is already paying off: since the beginning of 2018, Bosch says it has won electromobility orders worth approximately €13 billion, including production projects for electrical powertrains for passenger cars and light trucks.
