Ericsson, TIM and Comau test the ‘factory of the future’

Ericsson, TIM and Comau say they are testing the “factory of the future” through something called “5G network slicing”.

The three companies have joined forces to develop, on an experimental basis, innovative solutions for Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing by leveraging the potential of the 5G network. This initiative is part of the EU-funded 5Growth project.

Thanks to TIM and Ericsson’s deployment of a 5G network at Comau’s headquarters in Turin (Italy), three new applications have been launched to demonstrate the advantages of the new technology, and in particular those arising from the slicing functionality of the network, within an industrial environment. Indoor Robotics raises $15 million to ‘revolutionize building monitoring and security’

Indoor Robotics, an indoor drone technology company that recently launched Tando drone, has raised $15 million in series A funding.

The round of funding was led by Pitango and included Target Global, European Innovation Council Fund, and Spider Capital. This round enables Indoor Robotics to boost product development and enable intelligent indoor security worldwide.

Developing an autonomous indoor security robot has challenged robotics designers for years. Caja Robotics and Fives partner to tackle warehouse automation ‘challenges’

Caja Robotics, a provider of robotic and flexible goods-to-person solutions in fulfilment, is partnering with Fives Group, an integrator of advanced material handling and smart automation solutions, to tackle what the companies describe as “challenges” of warehouse automation in the European market.

Through the mutual exchange of know-how and technical expertise as well as a “deep understanding of customer needs and market demands”, both companies say they will strengthen their position as key players in warehouse automation.

Caja Robotics’ solution is complementary to Fives’ technology portfolio and will allow Fives to expand its offering in piece picking and to address the apparel and footwear sector to help its customers meet the challenges of omnichannel automation, while giving Caja Robotics the extra boost needed to tackle the southern European markets where Fives claims it demonstrates “leading positions”. New Scale Technologies, including its new Scale Robotics Division, has achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification for its quality management systems.

Lenovo opens first European manufacturing facility in Hungary

Computer giant Lenovo has officially opened the doors to its first in-house manufacturing facility in Europe.

Based in Ullo, Hungary, the factory focuses primarily on building server infrastructure, storage systems and high-end PC workstations used by customers throughout the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region.

Extending Lenovo’s international manufacturing operations, the investment represents significant economic potential for both the private and public sectors in Hungary, with increased production capacity, greater potential for collaboration with local vendors, and the creation of new job openings. Hai Robotics raises more than $100 million in D+ financing round

Hai Robotics, the developer of its own Autonomous Case-handling Robot (ACR) systems for warehouse logistics, has raised more than $100 million in a D+ round of financing.

The lead investor is Capital Today, and co-investors include a top US dollar fund and existing shareholders including 5Y Capital, Source Code Capital, Sequoia Capital and 01VC.

Kawasaki Robotics teams up with Realtime Robotics to develop robot motion planning

Kawasaki Robotics, a manufacturer of industrial robots and automation systems, has teamed up Realtime Robotics, a developer of autonomous motion planning for industrial robots, to automate the programming, implementation and control of its industrial robots.

Realtime Robotics and Kawasaki have partnered on several projects, including helping a major automotive manufacturer improve the speed of programming by 70 percent.

This manufacturer reduced the pre-production engineering commissioning process through the use of automatic, collision-free motion planning technology; technology that in the future will enable the time-consuming physical validation of robot paths to be eliminated altogether. Avikus conducts ‘world’s first’ transoceanic voyage with autonomous navigation

Avikus, a subsidiary of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD Hyundai), has successfully carried out the autonomous navigation of a large ship across the ocean, becoming the first company in the world to accomplish such a feat.

Together with SK Shipping, Avikus, which specializes in autonomous navigation, announced on June 2 that it had successfully completed autonomous navigation of Prism Courage, a 180,000 square-meter-class ultra-large LNG carrier.

Doosan Robotics expands global presence with opening US office

Doosan Robotics, which says it is “one of the world’s leading service robot and collaborative manufacturers”, has created a new business unit, Doosan Robotics Americas, establishing its US headquarters in Plano, Texas. 

Doosan Robotics has appointed Alex Lee as North and South America general manager. He will oversee the US business.
