Exclusive interview with Seiko Epson president Minoru Usui
The president of Seiko Epson says he wants to increase the company’s total annual revenues by 70 per cent within 10 years, and believes industrial robots will be one of the fastest-growing business units, with a 500 per cent hike in that time.
In an exclusive interview with Robotics and Automation News, Minoru Usui says Seiko Epson is hoping to achieve a dramatic expansion of its robotics division in the next decade, and “take the company from being a 1-trillion-yen-a-year business to being a 1.7-trillion-yen-a-year business”.
Epson Robots is one of the top industrial robot manufacturers in the world, and Usui is keen to build on this success.
In its annual report, the company lists robots in the “sensing and industrial solutions” business segment, which accounts for approximately $2 billion revenue a year. Company says foldable arms enable new 6-axis robot to be more efficient and compact
Epson has developed a new series 6-axis robot for use in compact applications with high demands on the precision of movements.
The company says the “special geometry” with foldable arm allows a range of up to 450 mm and in restricted space. Typical limitations of conventional six-axis as a high space requirement for overhead rides omitted.
Thus, the N-series is considerably more flexible and efficient in industrial applications of automotive, electronic, medical and Labortindustrie. The first variant of the Epson N-robot has a payload of up to 2.5 kg.

Epson is launching its S250 series of high-precision force sensors. The S250 series, which will be rolled out worldwide from early June, will be available as an option for the company’s six-axis and SCARA robots.
Employing Epson’s proprietary piezoelectric quartz sensing technology, the new force sensors are durable and sensitive, allowing them to accurately and consistently sense minimal amounts of force in six directions.
The company says this will allow customers to automate complex manufacturing tasks and will improve productivity. Company claims 20 per cent increase of its global install base
Epson Robots claims to have sold 10,000 robots since last year’s publication of a list of the largest industrial robot manufacturers in the world.

Epson Robots has expanded its 6-axis robot line-up with the introduction of the new Epson C8-Series industrial robots.
The company says the new robot has more reach, faster speeds, and greater payload, adding that its “SlimLine” design enables the Epson C8, C8L and C8XL robots to provide “superior performance for even the most demanding and complex applications”.
Michael Ferrara, director of Epson Robots, said: “Our Epson C4-Series robots have been in the market for a couple of years now and have been extremely well received for a wide variety of applications.
