Understanding the Importance of Hands-On Learning in Science and Technology

April 10, 2025 by Mark Allinson

Memorizing theories is useful, but real learning happens through hands-on experience. From engineering to medicine, applying knowledge builds problem-solving skills and prepares students for real-world challenges.

As industries evolve with robotics, AI, and space exploration, the need for practical learning is greater than ever. But in an increasingly digital world, how do we ensure students get the experience they need?

In this blog, we will share why hands-on learning is crucial in science and technology, how online education integrates practical experience, and what the future holds for experiential learning. [Read more…] about Understanding the Importance of Hands-On Learning in Science and Technology

Flexiv robot used in avant-garde art installation

November 28, 2022 by Mark Allinson

Flexiv, a maker of general-purpose robotics solutions, has collaborated with internationally renowned artist Stavros Didakis in the creation of his latest art installation, Xenoforms.

As an academic, researcher, and artist, Professor Didakis’ work focuses primarily on technological futures with a particular emphasis on architectural augmentation, sensorial interfaces and technological frameworks as extensions of human environments.

His latest piece features a Flexiv Rizon 10 adaptive robot which randomly selects a 3D printed model, places it on a pedestal, and then replaces it in its original position. [Read more…] about Flexiv robot used in avant-garde art installation

8 tips on finding a good job without a degree

February 10, 2021 by Liv

There is no arguing that college is a pivotal time in the lives of many people. It offers plenty of opportunities to explore, learn, and experience life.

That said, giving the somewhat obsolete college education a try is not something that everyone does. While some choose to turn down the college path due to unaffordability, others have their personal reasons.

Regardless, there is a silver lining here. True, not everyone can be a Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates after dropping out of college. [Read more…] about 8 tips on finding a good job without a degree

Alio launches ‘world’s first and only’ 6 degrees-of-freedom nano-positioner

June 3, 2020 by David Edwards

Alio Industries has launched what it claims to be the “world’s first and only 6 degrees-of-freedom nano-positioner with 60 degrees tip and tilt travel.

Alio Industries says the 60-degree tip/tilt travel of its Angulares Hybrid Hexapod is “by far the most angular travel range available from any 6-degrees-of-freedom positioner on the market”.

The Angulares features precision crossed roller bearing guides, optical incremental or absolute encoder feedback on all axes, linear motor and/or servo ball screw drives, unlimited programmable tool center point locations and coordinate offsets, and zero backlash on all axes. Laser interferometer verifies Trumpf Trumatic faster and more accurately

August 28, 2019 by David Edwards

When Trumpf saw API’s XD Laser at a trade show, they immediately recognized that it could measure the three degrees of freedom needed for production of their TruMatic 7000 punch laser machine in only a single measurement process.

A subsequent demo at Trumpf’s factory in Ditzingen, Germany, however, revealed more benefits than Trumpf was anticipating. [Read more…] about Laser interferometer verifies Trumpf Trumatic faster and more accurately

System guides energy, data and media safely, without interruption for rotational movements up to 360 degrees, says company

Motion plastics specialist igus has developed an extremely compact rotation module, which revolves around its own axis, even in confined spaces.

As with all rotary energy chain systems from igus, the module can be used to guide different types of media – power, signals, data, fibre-optic, pneumatic or fluids – in parallel without interruption.

Inside the module, cables and hoses are routed together without interruption, thus eliminating the need for expensive and complex rotary unions.  [Read more…] about Igus launches ‘extremely compact rotation module’ for tight spaces
