Project Business Automation: Large Manufacturers Learn to Integrate Disparate Systems

July 29, 2021 by Abdul Montaqim

By Thomas R. Cutler

Much attention has been paid to the small and mid-sized manufacturer. As local and regional job creators that attention has been well-deserved.

However, the reality is large manufacturers continue to represent a significant portion of jobs within the sector, and new solutions geared to their needs are among the most innovative and dynamic.

Project Business Automation (PBA) is a new category of business systems built specifically to support large project-based manufacturers from end-to-end. [Read more…] about Project Business Automation: Large Manufacturers Learn to Integrate Disparate Systems

Toyota Research Institute reaches ‘new technical milestones in robotics’

July 26, 2021 by Mai Tao

Toyota Research Institute (TRI) says it has reached “new technical milestones in robotics”. The company has unveiled new robotics capabilities aimed at solving complex tasks in home environments.

Specifically, TRI roboticists were able to train robots to understand and operate in complicated situations that confuse most other robots, including recognizing and responding to transparent and reflective surfaces in a variety of circumstances.

As TRI demonstrates in a new video (see below), this robust system allows robots to make generalizations in a range of scenarios, including in different homes. [Read more…] about Toyota Research Institute reaches ‘new technical milestones in robotics’

Siemens makes first industrial 5G router available

July 26, 2021 by David Edwards

Siemens has released its first industrial 5G router – the Scalance MUM856-1. The device connects local industrial applications to public 5G, 4G (LTE), and 3G (UMTS) mobile wireless networks.

The router can be used to remotely monitor and service plants, machines, control elements, and other industrial devices via a public 5G network – flexibly and with high data rates.

Demand for this type of solution is growing in industry. In addition, the device can be integrated into private 5G networks. The Scalance MUM856-1 therefore supports future-oriented applications such as mobile robots in manufacturing, autonomous vehicles in logistics or augmented reality applications for service technicians. How has Data Become the World’s Most Valuable Commodity?

July 22, 2021 by Mark Allinson

The world is packed full of tangible and valuable commodities, with oil offering a relevant case in point. In fact, global oil reserves equated to a staggering 1.7 billion barrels at the end of 2019, creating a vast marketplace that’s one of the most lucrative in the world.

However, we’re currently seeing an exponential rise in the value of intangible and digital commodities, such as cyber and data. The wider world of cyber could achieve a cumulative market value of $280 billion by 2025, while data is now considered to be the globe’s most valuable and vulnerable resource.

Of course, the level of vulnerability surrounding data continues to increase as the resource grows. But just how much data is being processed today, and where does this rank amongst the 10 most traded commodities in the world. Trusted Application and Data Security Verification in the Age of Hacking

July 12, 2021 by Mark Allinson

By Yoav Kutner, Founder and CEO of Oro, Inc

To achieve trusted application and data security, B2B eCommerce solutions must examine and identify potentially vulnerable areas of the operation.

Few B2B eCommerce applications are built from the ground up to support sizeable B2B enterprises and complex, multi-level organizational hierarchies with thousands of employees and millions of website customers.

Incorporating multiple levels of enhanced security measures, ensure applications and data are protected, and maintain compliance with privacy regulations. [Read more…] about Trusted Application and Data Security Verification in the Age of Hacking

Comau designs ‘highly automated, high-volume’ battery manufacturing line

July 5, 2021 by David Edwards

Comau, an industrial robotics and automation specialist, has designed and developed a “high-volume module manufacturing line” to produce new generation lithium-ion batteries for Leclanché, a provider of energy storage solutions for the heavy transportation, naval and railway industries.

Comau says the “state-of-the-art, highly automated line” is the result of a simultaneous engineering process and combines industrial robots, vision systems, laser welding, and the automated in-line validation of joints via artificial intelligence. Priority was given to ensuring multi-module configurability, full traceability and the highest level of safety.

The line includes the latest quality and process control technologies, thus setting the foundation for the transition towards Industry 4.0 principles. It will also allow Leclanché to produce up to six times the company’s current capacity, reaching an output of more than 60,000 modules per year. The solution is also expected to reduce costs by up to 20 percent, support 50 different product configurations and save Leclanché valuable time when introducing new formats into the manufacturing line.  [Read more…] about Comau designs ‘highly automated, high-volume’ battery manufacturing line
