US demands Hong Kong-made goods be relabelled ‘Made in China’

August 11, 2020 by Mai Tao

hong kong port-img-1 copy

The United States government is calling for goods made or exported to the US from Hong Kong to be relabelled “Made in China”, according to a report on the South China Morning Post.

The measure, to be introduced by US President Donald Trump, does not appear to need Congressional approval or any kind of vote.

It will mean that Hong Kong companies exporting to the US will be required to pay the same kind of punitive tariffs currently placed on goods arriving in America from mainland China. [Read more…] about US demands Hong Kong-made goods be relabelled ‘Made in China’

US tightens restrictions on Huawei

August 7, 2020 by Mai Tao

The US government has tightened its restrictions on doing business with Chinese telecommunications equipment supplier Huawei.

The US had already effectively banned American companies from providing a platform for Huawei, which led to the company being unable to put its products and services on the Android operating system used by the majority of smartphones around the world.

Although Android is an open-source operating system, Google, Samsung and many others have developed their own versions for their smartphones based on the original code and, therefore, can call it their own and prevent others connecting to it or using it. US targets Chinese tech giants for bans and sales

August 7, 2020 by Mark Allinson

The United States is targeting a range of Chinese-owned tech giants for bans or sales in a bid to put pressure on its economic rival.

The administration of President Donald Trump appears to be conflating “national security” issues with economic measures which it believes are fair while others consider protectionist.

Trump has signed executive orders which may see the sale within 45 days of video-sharing app TikTok to Microsoft. Another app in the administration’s bad books is WeChat, according to the South China Morning Post. [Read more…] about US targets Chinese tech giants for bans and sales

Desperate Chinese manufacturers resorting to ‘street vendor’ tactics

July 24, 2020 by Mark Allinson

Desperate Chinese manufacturers are resorting to “street vendor” tactics in order to survive amid the economic devastation caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

In the past, street vendors were targeted by the police and Communist government and shut down wherever they were found, even if they were licensed.

The thinking was that street vendors were a blight on urban landscapes and hampered regeneration programmes. [Read more…] about Desperate Chinese manufacturers resorting to ‘street vendor’ tactics

The impact of coronavirus on e-commerce with China

June 8, 2020 by David Edwards

By Matt Rivera, marketing and business expansion advisor for Asian markets in China

The spread of coronavirus has undoubtedly shifted the entire global economy. Businesses of almost every sector needed to rapidly react and navigate the challenges presented by the virus to quickly overcome them and move forward.

The Covid-19 pandemic continues to surge in Italy, Germany, Spain and nearly all over the world. Businesses in major global cities such as Rome and New York have been gravely affected by this unfortunate turn of events.

Companies are scrambling to mobilize responses, but the unpredictable nature of the virus, coupled with the obvious under-preparedness by business executives and government leaders, these responses have brought little to no success. Chinese media clamour suggests restrictions on rare earth metals exports to US

May 29, 2019 by Mai Tao

Chinese media outlets are raising the possibility of restrictions on the export of rare earth metals to the US.

The move could be the most effective response to US President Donald Trump’s decision to increase and broaden import tariffs on Chinese goods into the country.

According to the South China Morning Post, the ruling Communist Party’s propaganda outlet, People’s Daily, said in a commentary: “The Chinese people would never agree to the US using products made from rare earths exported from China to curb and suppress China’s development.” [Read more…] about Chinese media clamour suggests restrictions on rare earth metals exports to US
