Opinion: Automation planning for employee safety in warehouses

November 1, 2024 by Mark Allinson

By Heico Sandee, founder and CEO of Smart Robotics

Robotics and automation undoubtedly address several safety and efficiency challenges that warehouses have grappled with for years.

While efficiency and productivity are primary motivations behind automation, warehouses must prioritize the safety and well-being of those who spend most of their time around these automated systems – the employees.

Productivity and profitability mean little if warehouses are unsafe. Numbers speak for themselves as the National Safety Council reports that a worker injury costs companies an average of $38,000 in direct expenses, while indirect costs can amount up to a total of around $150,000 per accident.

Alabama family business builds lights-out manufacturing process based on Hermle equipment

November 1, 2024 by Mark Allinson

After spending most of their younger years in their father’s machine shop, two brothers have applied their knowledge to their own enterprise, Smith & Co, and have built a multimillion-dollar, advanced, lights-out CNC facility in Birmingham, Alabama

Robert and Dell Smith started in the manufacturing industry as kids, working with their father at his part-time machine shop in Tuscaloosa – about 50 miles from their current Birmingham, Alabama location.

In the late 1980s, Robert helped take the business to full-time operations, where they first experienced 5-axis and mill turn technology, primarily for the automotive and defense industries.

The Smiths recognized the need for standard operations – whether tooling, controls or systematic procedures – which led to an exponential growth of over 100 team members. In 2015, they sold the company but continued to work for six more years.

How Could Web3’s Decentralization Impact Algorithms?

October 31, 2024 by Mark Allinson

While the introduction of cryptocurrency back in 2008 was revolutionary, it wasn’t the concept of cryptocurrency itself that was truly groundbreaking – it was the network that cryptocurrency operates on.

The blockchain network which hosted Bitcoin – and now hosts thousands of other altcoins – was our first taste of the future of the internet.

Web3 has been a part of the online conversation for a while now. Designed to be entirely decentralised, this is the internet’s ‘next phase’ which is due to take over from Web2, the current version of the web that we all operate on today. Is Autonomy a Threat to Supercars?

October 30, 2024 by Mark Allinson

The notion that autonomy could be a threat to supercars has been around for some time now. The fear is that the emerging technology will change the way people use vehicles and, therefore, have a knock-on impact on the biggest brands in the space, like Ferrari and Lamborghini.

But whether this risk is existential remains to be seen. While autonomy is likely to affect the car industry in numerous ways, it is unclear if its effect will be moderate, large, or small. [Read more…] about Is Autonomy a Threat to Supercars?
