Comau designs and builds ‘cutting-edge’ automation technology for Li Auto factory

May 29, 2025 by Mai Tao

Industrial robotics specialist Comau has designed and developed what it describes as a “cutting-edge automation technology” for Li Auto’s next-generation range extender line, allowing the Chinese electric vehicle maker to reach an annual production capacity of up to 400,000 units.

(A range extender for an electric vehicle is a secondary power source, typically a small internal combustion engine, that acts as a generator to charge the EV’s main battery when it’s running low.)

The full-value-chain solution, which includes concept design, system simulation, assembly, and commissioning, highlights Comau’s ability to support the dynamic demands of the fast-growing electric vehicle (EV) market with innovative, high-performance manufacturing systems and enabling technologies.

The integrated automation solution, which covers the interior assembly line, exterior assembly line, cylinder head line, and piston-connecting rod line, has significantly enhanced reliability, operational efficiency and flexibility. Universal Robots offers new torque interface to empower research and innovation

May 29, 2025 by Mai Tao

Having the ability to directly control the torque of all the collaborative robot (cobot) joints opens vast opportunities for cobots to carry out demanding tasks.

But even for experienced cobot users and researchers, building your own software stack to enable this is both time consuming and challenging.

That’s why Universal Robots (UR) has developed a new low-level torque interface that gives access to control the target torque for all the joints of the UR cobot at 500 Hz. [Read more…] about Universal Robots offers new torque interface to empower research and innovation

Caltech unveils flying robot that transforms into road vehicle in mid-air

May 29, 2025 by Mai Tao

The ‘morphorobot’ was ‘inspired by nature’, say its developers

Specialized robots that can both fly and drive typically touch down on land before attempting to transform and drive away. But when the landing terrain is rough, these robots sometimes get stuck and are unable to continue operating.

Now a team of Caltech engineers has developed a real-life Transformer that has the “brains” to morph in midair, allowing the dronelike robot to smoothly roll away and begin its ground operations without pause.

The increased agility and robustness of such robots could be particularly useful for commercial delivery systems and robotic explorers. [Read more…] about Caltech unveils flying robot that transforms into road vehicle in mid-air

Dire Wolves: From Ancient DNA to Living Animals

May 29, 2025 by Mai Tao

The successful revival of dire wolves (Aenocyon dirus) by Colossal Biosciences marks an extraordinary journey from ancient DNA fragments to living, breathing animals. This scientific achievement, announced on April 8, 2025, transformed 13,000-year-old genetic code into three healthy dire wolf pups named Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi.

The scientific process began with the extraction of ancient DNA from two well-preserved dire wolf fossils: a tooth from Sheridan Pit, Ohio, approximately 13,000 years old, and an inner ear bone from American Falls, Idaho, around 72,000 years old. These rare specimens provided the genetic blueprint that would guide the resurrection effort.

Extracting usable DNA from specimens this old presented enormous challenges. Ancient DNA is typically highly fragmented and degraded, with only random portions of the genome surviving. Dr. Beth Shapiro, Colossal’s Chief Science Officer and a leading expert in ancient DNA, led the team that overcame these obstacles through innovative sequencing and computational approaches. EEVE to unveil garden robot you teach by example, not programming

May 28, 2025 by Mai Tao

EEVE is preparing to unveil Willow X, a humanoid-style garden robot you literally teach by example, no programming needed. Simply demonstrate a task once and Willow X copies you; repeat a few times and she’ll execute it autonomously.

With a planned price of just €8,990, a fraction of the €40,000 cost of comparable humanoid robots, Willow X makes personal robotics radically more accessible.

The launch is set for this summer, with pre-orders starting as of today at eeve.com and first deliveries planned for August–September. [Read more…] about EEVE to unveil garden robot you teach by example, not programming

Veho and RIVR partner to improve e-commerce delivery through AI-powered robots

May 27, 2025 by Mai Tao

Veho, the technology company that operates a parcel delivery platform in the US, and RIVR, a physical AI and robotics developer, have launched an initiative to improve e-commerce delivery experience and efficiency through the use of parcel delivery robots.

The deployment begins today in Austin, with plans to expand to additional markets later this year based upon learnings during the initial trial. The robots are not intended to replace human delivery drivers.

Rather, they are intended to enable humans to deliver more parcels, faster, with less physical strain, all while maintaining the delivery experience for which Veho is known. [Read more…] about Veho and RIVR partner to improve e-commerce delivery through AI-powered robots
