ETH Zurich’s ANYmal robot learns to play badminton using reinforcement learning

ETH Zurich researchers have pushed their quadruped robot, ANYmal, into new territory: the badminton court.

A new video released by the university shows the four-legged robot attempting to return shots using a racket, advanced vision systems, and reinforcement learning-based controls. (See video below.)

ANYmal, built by ANYbotics, developed as a versatile quadruped platform, uses dual cameras to track the shuttlecock in flight. The system looks for the shuttle’s color, calculates its trajectory, and then directs the robot’s motors to move into position and execute a return shot. ABB and B&R bring joint automation technologies for brewery and beverage to drinktec 2025

ABB and its machine and factory automation business, B&R Industrial Automation, will exhibit brewery and beverage technologies together at drinktec 2025, the world economic summit for the beverage and liquid food industry.

The event, running between September 15 and 19 at the Trade Fair Center Messe in Munich, Germany, will give visitors a chance to see how ABB technologies combine to optimize operations across the full production cycle.

Spanning process control, adaptive manufacturing and digital optimization, ABB and B&R solutions can be combined into a single, interoperable platform to support safer operations, improve quality control and reduce resource utilization. Kuka launches new autonomous mobile robot platform

Kuka has expanded its autonomous mobile robot (AMR) lineup with the launch of the KMP 250P, a mobile platform designed to carry goods and components weighing up to 250 kilograms.

The system, which can also be fitted with a lifting unit, will be available for order in December 2025.

JR Automation unveils plans for $72.8 million global headquarters in Michigan

JR Automation, a Hitachi Group company and global automation specialist, has unveiled plans for a new global headquarters in Zeeland, Michigan. The project is expected to cost $72.8 million. 

The announcement follows a strategic meeting in Tokyo between Hitachi executives, JR Automation leadership, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, underscoring the company’s commitment to innovation, global collaboration, and investment in Michigan’s advanced manufacturing sector.

Dürr builds automotive paint shop for Volkswagen plant in Mexico

Dürr has built a paint shop designed to slash CO2 emissions at one of the Volkswagen Group’s largest manufacturing facilities. The plant in Puebla, Mexico, was inaugurated in January 2025.

The turnkey project includes two identical painting lines that are particularly environmentally friendly due to their electrified equipment, such as the electric drying system.

Universal Robots selects Technicon as solutions partner in pharmaceuticals
