Ibeo and SICK partner in ‘largest ever’ LiDAR co-operation agreement

January 19, 2021 by David Edwards

Ibeo Automotive Systems and SICK Sensor Intelligence are partnering in what is described as the “largest ever LiDAR co-operation agreement”. The technology partnership between Hamburg-based automotive LiDAR specialist Ibeo and SICK will result in a 3D solid-state LiDAR sensor for industrial applications.

The technology, developed by Ibeo to automotive standards, is based on a new photon laser measurement technology and is entirely free of moving parts. An additional, camera-like reference image adds a “fourth dimension” to the measurement provided by the sensor.

The market for autonomous and semi-autonomous systems in an industrial context is predicted to grow at above-average rates. There is particular demand for durable, small, and cost-efficient sensor solutions. [Read more…] about Ibeo and SICK partner in ‘largest ever’ LiDAR co-operation agreement

Denso partners with Aeva to bring new ‘groundbreaking’ LiDAR to market

January 19, 2021 by Mai Tao

Denso is partnering with US LiDAR and perception systems company Aeva to develop “next-generation” sensing and perception systems.

Together, the companies will advance Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) LiDAR, which they describe as “a groundbreaking solution” that measures velocity, in addition to depth and reflectivity, and bring it to the mass vehicle market.

LiDAR plays a key role in automated driving and advanced driver-assistance systems. At present, most LiDAR systems use the Time of Flight method to operate. [Read more…] about Denso partners with Aeva to bring new ‘groundbreaking’ LiDAR to market

How Automation Increases the Effectiveness of an Organization

January 14, 2021 by Polly

In today’s tech-driven world, more and more companies are resorting to automation and taking help from relevant software programs to increase effectiveness and boost performance.

While some still consider it a threat, automation can enhance your company’s progress if used in the right way. Software robots and machine learning are also a part of automation that reduces human labour and increases productivity.

Companies use automation tools to increase efficiency as most takes are operated by robots, software tools, and artificial intelligence. With time, machines have learned to use logic and streamline processes applied in a professional work front. [Read more…] about How Automation Increases the Effectiveness of an Organization

Swiss university developing mobile robot that learns on the job

January 7, 2021 by David Edwards

A team from the Autonomous Systems Lab at the public research university ETH Zurich in Switzerland is creating robots and intelligent systems that are able to learn on the job. (See video below.)

The team’s machine – which consists of a robotic arm mounted on a mobile platform – can “autonomously operate in complex and diverse environments”, says an article on Clearpath Robotics’ website.

Using a Clearpath Ridgeback as a base and equipped with a Franka Emika Panda manipulator arm (called RoyalPanda, that is Ridgeback + Panda), the team is experimenting with a series of different scenarios to develop best practices of how a robot could “learn”.
