ABB invests in ESS to ‘reduce costs and emissions for automotive paint shops’

ABB has entered into a strategic collaboration with Austria-based Engineering Software Steyr (ESS) to develop powerful simulation tools that will transform automotive paint shop operations while reducing costs by up to 30 percent.

As part of the collaboration, ABB will take a minority investment in ESS. Financial details of the investment were not disclosed.

“Delivering faster and more energy efficient solutions for the paint process is the final piece of the puzzle in digitalizing the manufacturing transition in the automotive industry,” said Marc Segura, President, ABB Robotics division. Comau to build ‘full-scale’ automation solution for electric vehicle maker Mullen Automotive

Comau has agreed a strategic alliance with Mullen Automotive, an emerging electric vehicle manufacturer, for the build-out of a vehicle body shop at Mullen’s Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Center in Tunica, Mississippi, United States.

Comau and Mullen Automotive are joining forces to develop the state-of-the-art body shop for the new and upcoming Mullen “Five” EV Crossover.

Okuma makes ‘conversational programming’ standard on its CNC machines

Okuma, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of industrial equipment, has introduced “conversational programming” as standard on its CNC machines.

Okuma says its Advanced One Touch (AOT) conversational programming software enables shops to “easily create programs without the need for highly-trained programmers, achieve faster setup times, and increase machine productivity”.

Okuma America says that select machines from Okuma’s core product line now come equipped with the Advanced One Touch-Interactive Graphics Function (AOT-IGF), the conversational programming software designed for Okuma’s lathes, machining centers and multitasking machines. Walmart deal helps Shopify shares skyrocket more than 300 percent

Shopify shares have skyrocketed to all-time highs over the past few weeks, largely as a result of its new partnership with Walmart. Shopify is the first online commerce platform partner that Walmart has signed such a deal with. 

The agreement, agreed in June, allows Shopify – which bought warehouse robot maker 6 River Systems last year for $450 million – to put 1,200 of its merchants into Walmart’s marketplace

Walmart is America’s largest retail chain, with annual revenues of more than $500 billion. The vast majority of its sales are in brick-and-mortar stores, but the company has recently been making a big push into the digital space.
